Just got me a new Dell Poweredge rack server, I could use some advice on moving my forum from my old server to my new one. I am running wwf 8.05. I am running sql server 2005 and windows server 2003 on both machines. I tried to just backup the database on the old server to be restored on the new one, but sql manager will not let me restore the backup to the new server, I dont think that I am doing it right, so anyone who could help me, please do.

There are a number of ways to do this, the simplest is to detach the database in your old server move the 2 database files to the new server and reattach them.

If this fails and the backup method you mention fails you can use the import/export tools in the SQL Management Studio, although make sure after you still have your default values as it doesn't always move these across.

when i've gone from one server to another with databases other that Web Wiz I:
1.  backed up the DB on the old server
2.  copied the backup file to the new server
3.  went into Enterprise Manager
4.  went to the DB I wanted to restore to
5.  right clicked, selected "All Tasks"
6.  selected "Restore database"
7.  selected restore from "Device"
8.  added my file to the the Device list
9.  restored my database.
10.  adjusted database Users as needed.

works for me.  may not be the best way tho.

Just as a quick not if you are moving from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005 the only way to do this is to detach then re-attach the database.
