If you place your mouse over the Topic and Forum icons, it will also tell you the number of unread posts in the topic or forum. This will decrement as you read the posts.

The star symbol shows if there are new posts in a Forum or Topic.

Looks good Bruce. I like the drop down menus like over a user's ID on the left. Not sure about the Reply Options one though, seems like a needless duplication of the Quote and Reply buttons?

I also noticed that the logon page correctly redirects now!

[Edit]Althoug I now see after being logged in that teh Edit and Delete butons are gone and under the Reply options.

It may look like that, but depending on your login status, depends on the options you have in that drop down.

For example, if it is your own post you will have edit, delete, etc. options. If you are a modertor you will have hide, move post, block IP options.

It's away of adding more options to each post, but at the same time keeping it looking clean.

Will however, look at having the drop down removed if there are not going to  be any extra options displayed to the user.

There are also a number of other new features, such as a drop down quick Forum Search, and a new Topic Search.

There is also a drop down of this months calendar if you move the mouse over the status bar calendar link. This uses AJAX so that page loading times remain fast and to prevent un-needed database hits.

Yeah, as per my Edit I found that out after logging in. LOL It certainly does tidy it up in that instance.

I've also had a nosey through the Member Control Panel. That is MUCH nicer now with the tabs, very easy to navigate.

Is the New Topic search the Unanswered Topics one with the blue star?

Found the quick search (I know it's a beta, but the Advanced Search link doesn't take me to an full advanced search page?), very handy.

The Topic Search is near the top of this page.

If you have a look near the top of this page you have the title 'Message' to the right hand side you also have 'Topic Search' and 'Topic Options'

Glad to see 'Watch' & 'Un-Watch' forums/topics now have their original (version 7) names, but it looks as though the description doesn't actually change until you logout then back in again.

After checking again it seems that the 'Watch This Topic' description doesn't actually change at all to 'Un-Watch', though the dialog box that's displayed does display the correct information.

Ah yes, got it. Thats a new Topic Search, not a New Topic search! lol

Well, the Un-Answered Topics is nifty too though.

And now we're on page two, nicer page navigation too!!

To reduce database hits and page load times it uses AJAX to findout if you are subscribed to a forum or a topic, so if you re-open the drop down it should get the new data from the server.

Yes thats what I expected, but it doesn't always seem to work for me. I tried a couple of times now but seem to get different results. Confused

I can't see how this could happen as the data comes directly from the database. I've tried it myself about 20 times, clicking on and off in different browsers and it seems to be working fine.

So when you click on 'Watch This Topic' link, the page refreshes, and when you go back to the drop down once the page reloads it doesn't say 'Un-Watch This Topic'?

OK, found the problem, looks like IE sometimes caches the AJAX file, so it's not updating.

I've updated the AJAX files with no-cache directives which should hopefully fix the issue, but for you to be able to check you would need to clear out your IE cache.

i know its 'beta' and its easily changed, but am not to keen on a few of the images

eg the Icons for forums on the homepage.

meh looks like when WWF 9 comes out i'll be hard at work making a few skins
but the style/layout looks great - i can see some really nice skins coming out for V9.

also, am not to keen on the OTT of drop down menus, kind of annoying to edit or delete

I see that this demo is based on the existing forum of webwiz guide, were their any modification or changes made to the database? Will we be required to make any changes on the database to use version 9?

Images are very easy to swap, and with the skins in the admin area allowing you to change the directory they should be easy to apply.

To make it even simpler no images contain text, even the 'Post Reply' button uses CSS to give the effect of a button containing text, so would be very simple to swap over with a different image, or translate using the language files.

The images for the fourms and topics place the hot, locked, sticky, etc. incons over the top, so these are also simpler to replace rather than having over 100 different images.

The drop downs are to give the forum a less cluttered look, there are more options available on each page, and once you get used to were they are it makes it nicer to use without all the clutter but with all options easily at hand.

Works great now Borg, and didn't need to clear down IE.

One thing I think would be great benefit, would be to redirect to the exact page you were on when logging in.  Please please release this in v9!

Following on from the Ajax quick search etc - any chance of having a login box appear when hovering over the Login button, instead of having to go to the Login page?

Also, when in a topic, I don't seem to have the Active Topics & Unreplied Topics links...?

On many pages it already does redirect to the page you came from, but at present not when you use the 'Login' link at the top of the page. If you login from a Reply, New Topic, etc page it will do.

Having a drop down quick login is a good idea and will have to look into it.

Ok, hopefully the Active Topics is something we can enable on all pages, in the code, if we wish.

Another feature which would make things a lot easier, is a 'Mark all posts as read' link / button on Active Topics.  I continually have to visit the homepage when I've read all topics, and waiting for new ones etc.

I agree with the others - very nice indeed! AJAX - oh yea!

IE6 on XP - when I mouseover either the search or calendar, they pop up nicely but when I move the mouse away they will stay visible until I click somewhere else on the page. I alt/tab to other windows and then back and each is still visible.
Not sure if this is by design - just thought you may like to know.

regards

suede

This is done by design, they work in the same way as the drop downs in the menu bar of a web browser like IE or Firefox. The previous drop down disappears when you move other another drop down or click anywhere on the page.

Don't drop downs usually only stay down if you click them open? A mouse over open only keeps them open as long as the cursor is over them. Try it out on the Start menu to see what I mean.

This is fine when you click on a menu as this suggests that you actually want to make a selection. But when you just mouse over, I think the menu should either not show at all (IE behaviour) or disappear when you move the mouse away (my preference).

Have updated the javscsript to work in this way now, although due to complications in some browsers like Opera this is triggered by moving the mouse away from the drop down, not the menu item.

There are a number of other bugs in this approach, like some drop downs randomly disappearing in Firefox, but these will have to be worked on.

The reason why drop downs are not triggered when you click on them is the menu item that triggers the drop down in many cases takes you to another page or another option.

Yes this is the bug I mentioned in my previous post with Firefox 2.

Because you have asked for drop down menus to disappear when they move the mouse away from them we have been working all day on a solution. The solution we have at present works in all browsers except for some issues in Firefox.

The problem is a bug in Firefox, that means that if the drop down overlaps another <div> tag the onMouseOut event will activate at the wrong time if you move the mouse to fast. If you move the mouse slowly it doesn't happen.

Have tried lots of different ways for hours including building in a delay into the onMouseOut event, but this is also not working.

At present trying to come up with a solution to this, if we can't it may mean having to switch back to the previous method of having to click on the screen for the drop down to be hidden.

Right hopefully now sorted the issue, if you could check in Firefox on your machine also it would be much appreciated.

The course of the issue it would seem is a bug in Firefox, it's because the Post Options drop down goes over a <div> for the posts which has CSS 'overflow: auto;' this is so that posts remain within the page.

When another element is placed over the top of this which uses a onMouseOut event Firefox can't handle this and will fire the onMouseOut event if you move the mouse faster than a snails crawl.

It would seem the solution is to set the drop down menu that is placed over it to also be set to 'overflow: auto;' in the CSS stylesheet.

I'm not sure what I should be seeing but this still seems to work as before for me. If I move my mouse directly down then the menu disappears. But if I move my mouse up, left or right then the menu stays until I click away. I've tested this in both IE7 and Firefox 2.0.

The problem trying to overcome at the moment is with the Post Options drop down which randomly disappears in Firefox when you try to select an item.

I think however after spending about 8 hours on this that these issues will not be over come in all browsers because you find a work around to a bug in one browser you then break it in another browser.

I think will have to go back to the drawing board and create it so that the drop downs only become available if you click the menu item.

However, any feedback would be welcome as the present implementation is workable, but with a few minor issues, but are these liveable?

for me, as i said before, it only seems to affect links.

if you look at the Search box, or even the calendar box in the top nav bar bit.

it doesnt close though the calendar does if you go over the date.

so as far as i can tell, it 'crashes' on a link

It looks like from reports back trying to produce a multiple drop down system which allows drops downs to appear and disappear when you move the mouse over them just isn't workable with so many different bugs to overcome in various browsers.

Instead have rebuilt the drop down system, so that it requires that the item be clicked on and off for the drop downs to appear and disappear. This is much more workable as all browsers tested support this without having to write hacks to workaround various browser bugs.

This is in IE6 on XP;

We shall look into this, the problem is IE6 and below is very buggy, the sooner people upgrade to IE7 the better.

The new version already degrades for IE 6 and below users, if you want to see the new version in all it's glory you need to be using IE7, Firefox, Opera, or Safari, as MS were 10 years behind in support for things like PNG images.

This is a shame as I thought this was coming along nicely and I know you spent a lot of development time on this.

I'm sure your fed up of this feature already, but would it be possible to close the dropdown menu on a second click of the menu item rather than having to click elsewhere on the webpage (first click opens menu, second click close it)?

Excellent !!
Thanks for all the work (and a lot of time) necessary for this.

Here are some suggestions that i found so far and that are worth noticing.

- personally i still find html code a bit "messy". For example we have tags like this
<table class="basicTable" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="3" align="center">

or

<tr class="msgEvenTableRow" style="height:200px;min-height:200px;">

I would really like to have all attributes written in CSS files;   and there is no need for mixing css classes and atributes like these mentioned.
On the same note i would rather see tags like <div style="float:left;"> declared in CSS files for an easier integration on various websites.

I share the opinion with MortiOly about active topics and unreplied topics missing in top navigation when not on forum index page. IMHO the fact that some other forums act like this isn't a valid argument .. and i certainly hope the implementation will allow to modify top navigation easily.

- Any database changes? I guess most of us that have made some modification are interested to know this.

- i'm aware that it may be premature to ask this but do you plan to introduce new "integrated" features like photo gallery? I hesitated to try one mods currently under development since i'm not sure if it will be compatible with v-9 and it's a bit of must have feature for my site.

Once again, thank you very much for this; i will definitely take a deeper look at this and will report any "issue" i may find.

The drop downs appearing and disappearing on mouse over not only was buggy but also got a bit annoying and messy after awhile, with drops downs appearing almost everytime you moved the mouse. The method of having to click to have them appear is much cleaner and is much less buggy in verious browsers.

For those who wanted the present database changes they are:-

Quote Changes to tblConfiguration
New fields:-
1. A_Code - data type = boolean - default value = true
2. Upload_allocation - data type = interger - default value = 10
3. NewsPad - data type = boolean - default value = false

Changes to tblAuthor
New fields:-
1. Newsletter - data type = boolean - default value = false

Changes to tblGroup
New fields:-
1. Image_uploads - data type = boolean - default value = false
2. File_uploads - data type = boolean - default value = false

If mod builders have kept to the guidelines and prefixed any of their database changes with the word 'mod' then the new database changes should not conflict with database changes that have been made by using 3rd party mods.

Most of the underlying code for the forum engine remains the same so most mods should work. Where most of the work on the present version is being directed is on a new frontend and a new method for uploading and managing files and images. This will also help prepare for the planned gallery which will be in future versions, but not unfortunately in version 9 due to time restraints as we have over 12 months worth of work on various projects waiting to be released which all hinges on the completion of version 9 of Web Wiz Forums.

Hey
Borg , its good, the new design is faster, but I don't know what did you do in admin area, did you added any new features? I mean useful feature, not just changing interfaces, something like new management tools

Yes there is a new generic member import tool which can import members from other databases including other forum systems.

The upload system is also being re-written and as a result uploads including permissions can now be set on the same page, instead of going through the forum permission pages.

Member accounts can now be edited from the admin area, and searching for members will also be improved, as will be looking at additional options like searching by email address.

Where can I get a copy of these guidelines? I tried a search but didn't turn anything up. Whilst my Photo Album mod as it is now doesn't require any changes to the WWF tables, I have been playing with integrating it properly into the WWF security system and that required a couple of new fields in WWF tables.

I take it variable names will remain unchanged?

Thanks,
Meanwhile, You told AJAX features, and I thought you written quick reply with AJAX , as you seen in vbulletin the quick reply is using AJAX ,

And again as you seen in vBulletin it has a section called Related Topics, I thought you will add this to version 9 but you did'nt , the main benefit of this feature is showing old related topics to specific topic, so it help search engins to see old topics again.

is it possible to add this to the new version ?

If you look around each of the different forum systems on the market is different, each with there own unique features.

It sounds like you are wanting Web Wiz Forums to be an exact replica or vBulletin. We'll I'm sorry to disappoint you but that simply will not happen.

A post from yesterday in this topic should explain what to expect in this new version.

Priority at the moment is to get Web Wiz Forums complete and out as over 12 months worth of work on a new site, knowbase, documentation, and new version of all the products are sat here waiting for teh release of Web Wiz Forums version 9.

Once this is out we can concentrate on looking into producing an ASP.NET version, which doesn't have many of the issues that effects ASP, so can add new features that you see in other forums that are very difficult if not impossible to do in ASP.

Does this mean we won't be getting the skin feature in V9?

oh , it's very wonderful in this version and  these're something I 've thinked:
- It's very usefull if the new forum version  has a quick login form always in the top of board and we can login any where.
- I can't right click (For open in new tab and copy link in Firefox or IE 7 ...)when the drop-down menu is clicked (in profile or other option), and the drop-down menu look like not nice.
thank everyone and what do you think ?

Also, not sure if this is the new version that's effected this...

When I received reply updates for this thread, the subjects vary.

Ie;

Web Wiz Forums Topic Reply Notification : Web Wiz
http://forums.webwiz.net//forum_posts.asp?TID=23521&PID=123902#123902

Web Wiz Forums Topic Reply Notification : Web Wiz Forums version 9 Live Demo
http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=23521&PID=123881#123881

If you notice, the email with the incorrect subject, has a double // in the link after bbs.

Also (also also), URLs don't seem to be turning into links on their own.

Will look into it.

But the quick search doesn't use AJAX the only things that us AJAX is for the calendar and for the Watch This Topic/Forum menu items.

For links to auto turn into URL's you need to be using IE.

If it does not have it, i will update my http://www.s2h.co.uk/wwf/mods/gender-script/ - Gender Script for Version 9

though if it does have it, i will try to make a 'conversion' script so your members gender will be kept when you upgrade to v9.
but this would depend on how (and if) borg was to add gender to V9

First of all, WWF9 looks great!

I have a question about the calendar.
Is it possible in the new version to add a multiple date event? I've modified WWF8 to do so but it was a hell of a job and I don't want to do it again...

Maybe if I send someone the code (there might be a few dutch words in it, but those are only names and stuff) of the modded pages, he or she can add it in WWF9?

P.S. Borg, as you can see I'm able to login. I deleted all my cookies again and now it worked (yesterday it didn't so...sorry about the mail)

Without wishing to add more on your plate as I know how much work has already gone in to v9 and probably still needs doing, but I think this would be an awesome feature and one I definately need as most of our Club events are over a weekend.

It's not difficult to implement, the question is how it should be implemented. In the calendar should it display a link to the event on each day that the even is on.

EG, if an event runs from the 6th to the 12th should it display a link to the even on each day in the calendar?

Yes that's exactly how I see it working, with perhaps a different icon to indicate that it's a multi-day event.

Also is there any chance of an option to change the start day of the week? I know this has been discussed before but wondered if that issue had now been resolved. I really would like to keep my weekend days together (Saturday & Sunday).

Thanks for considering.

So would I, it would be nice. But for some reason in their wisdom Microsoft decided that a VBscript week should start on Sunday and not Monday.

Trying to get around this limitation could be done but would require weeks of testing and coding and at this stage we really need to get version 9 released. Spending weeks trying to work around Micrososfts week beginning on Sunday really can't justify that amount of delay at the present time, but could be something looked into once version 9 is released.

Yes, that would work. One Event thread and a link on the calender each day the event occurs. Cool

It's certainly something that I would like to see in web Wiz Forums but as time is so tight at present trying to get such a large number of things released all at the same time, what might happen instead is that the database fields will be created for version 9 to support some of these new features and then the features can be added in minor updates over the coming months without adding any additional delays.

I have been trying to do this myself as well, but as has been mentioned - it is a hell of a task!

It would be fantastic if possible to include it in v9.

Another thing I would like to see if at all possible is the possibility to add different fields of different types on the registration page ie. if you want you can add another text field or a checkbox field or drop down or radio option, etc. these would be created and added to the author tbl also.

I believe there was a MOD that did something similar, but was not as complete/efficient. I have had to add my own fields, but think many people would like the facility to rename them or add some extra fields.

I don't know if this is off topic, but...Embarrassed

Would it be possible to include new button in version 9 - "Youtube button"?

I think that you already know what I'll ask but I'll give you an example...

Youtube is really popular "theme" at my forum and therefore I would really like that my users can easily add Youtube videos to their posts. For example, there is one forum (vBulletinEmbarrassed) that has this interesting feature.

It's menu looks like this:

When you press a "Youtube button" all you need is to paste a link:

Code after pasting:

Would that be a big problem to implement in V9?Embarrassed

MortiOli, I already know that I can add flash to a post (I have used SEARCH buttonBig%20smileWink). But I think that it could be...easier.

To use Forum Code we need to look at the code that YouTube provides us, and we need to extract the URL that lies within it. Also, we have to use FLASH tag.

This really isn't a problem to me or to forum members that know something about tags and web pages. But to other user this is little "to complicated". They just want to copy link from Youtube (main link) and paste it to the forum - without URL extraction and FLASH tag inserting.

Take a closer look to a second picture in my previous post. Notice the URL. That isn't extracted URL from the code.

The YOUTUBE tag is already something that will certainly be added as the code is already there, it should only take 10 minutes to modify the code to add in this new feature.

Thanks for the great work.

I also want to mention that I need multi-day events as well, just as described by the others.

Also, it would be nice if there was a way to view events in a specific forum only, also hiding birthdays (e.g. only show events on calendar that are in the "Web Wiz Forums Support" forum, hiding any events posted in other forums).

I'm sorry to hear the gallery won't be ready for version 9, but I am glad that the infrastructure for it is being built.

The Calendar enhancements and Image/Video Gallery are the only reasons why I am looking to upgrade at this time (although I will upgrade for security issues, of course).  Those are the two killer features I am waiting for.

Thanks.  I appreciate all your hard work.

Some nivce ideas.

The Calendar already allows you to turn off birthdays from the drop down at the top next to where you select month and view type.

I know.  I just mentioned it because I wanted to have a URL that specifies the forum and no birthdays when looking at the calendar.

In addition to having the functionality native to the forum, I am looking to be able to link directly to the calendar with the properly filtered events showing from other pages on the website.

I have started integrating the WWF threads, the WWF Calendar with the articles and multi-year events on my site.

Example of Multi-Year / Multi-Day Event:
http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/carnival/carnival.asp?festival=102 - http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/carnival/carnival.asp?festival=102
http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=77305 - http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=77305
http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/calendar_week.asp?M=7&Y=2007&DB=0 - http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/calendar_week.asp?M=7&Y=2007&DB=0

As you can see, we integrated the forum, calendar and the rest of the site.  The same event appears in more than one place on the site, and you can click between them.

Example of article integration (not calendar related):
http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/travel/content.asp?article=988 - http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/travel/content.asp?article=988
http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=76890 - http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=76890

Another example, although not related to the calendar suggestion.  Just wanted to show you another similar implementation of integration.

...

Even without the integration, just having that ability to filter events by forum on the calendar would make it easier to post and a variety of events of different types or locations.

Speaking of location, I wish there was a field where the location could be specified, and also be able to filter on that as well.

Thanks.
