I have just installed version 8.06 and need to use IP banning for a rude and obscene user. Unfortunately he gets a new IP every time he dials in to the Internet.

Is it possible to use two wildcards in IP banning? I would like to ban the whole range 88.210.*.*

Will that work?

You just need to put in:-

88.120.*

The way you give would not work as it is an incorrect syntax.

If you wanted to go really mad you could use:-

88.*

But don't use:-

*

as you'll ban everyone.

You may also want to enable email activation and suspend the users account this will prevent them from signing up again using the same account.

You can also enable full moderation so posts are manually checked before being displayed to the public, if you enable this for a few weeks this user will soon get board when their posts are not displayed.

Be careful, you could ban everyone from his domain. Like if you did mine, you'd ban thousands of users, not just me, if you went and wild-carded the last two octets of the address.
I guess it depends on your expected audience, you could look at the server logs and see if you ever have any other visitors from that turkey's domain.

Thanks for updating me on the banning syntax.

I am aware of the other blocking methods you mentioned, but we need to have a Forum where users can participate with anonymity, so email activation is not an option.

Thanks for the help.
