How exactly when upgrading from ver 7.x to 8.x does one "remove the old version 7.x version of Web Wiz Forums from the server" (item #2 from How to Use this upgrade tool.text)?

On the server, I looked on the Control Panel under Add or REmove programs and Web Wiz is not there. I assumed that Web Wiz would have a *.exe file; does it not?

Do you mean by remove, to simply delete all the Web Wiz related *.asp files and directories/folders? [If so, this does have labor and time implications, since we have used Web Wiz since at least 2004 - I inherited the system and set-up - and the pages are customized so that their design reflects our website's look and feel (navigation, logo, banner, statistical counter coding is embedded, etc., etc.).]

Please advise and clarify: manually delete all Web Wiz *.asp files first, before using  you Upgrade tool?

If the above is true - deleting all Web Wiz-related *.asp files from the server, then you Step #4 "remove the file 'common.asp' from the forum directory" makes no sense, since no files will be left there. ?

But if you have removed all Web  Wiz files from the server, then you would have no 'common.asp' file, nor would you have a forum directory, since all files would have been removed per your Step #2

2.) After using the upgrade tool, then do you download WebWiz Forums verison 8, as per your Step #12 "upload web wiz forums version 8"?

Of course, we have backups of our SQL Server Forums database. We DO want to retain all data in these databases, as people still frequently refer to our discussion forums.

Look forward to hearing from you so we can hopefully get our old Web Wiz version updated to a current version. Thank you.

First let me explain how ASP and web programs generally work so you get a better idea of what the instructions mean;

Web site software written in PHP, ASP, etc. doesn't come with .exe files as the majority of people don't have access to the server to run such installation programs and only have FTP access to upload individual files. Also websites tend to be in almost any conceivable place on the server, it's not like installing a windows program to the program files folder and adding a shortcut in the windows start menu.

This means that ASP programs generally come in a zip file which you unzip and then upload the individual files via FTP to your web space on the web server.

To upgrade Web Wiz Forums version 7 to version 8 (although 9 is out in a few weeks so you maybe better of waiting) you need to first delete all the old version 7 files from the server (except for your database as you want to keep your existing data)

You then need to upload to your web site the upgrade tool which is basically an ASP web page you call via the web server by typing in the location of the tool in your web browser, this will upgrade your databases schema to be compatible with version 8.

Once this is complete follow the install instructions for version 8 to upload the files to the server and edit in notepad the database_connections.asp file with database login details to your upgraded version 7 database.

Hey, thanks so much for your response. So just 2 more quick questions and then I am all set for now, I hope:

1.) Since I do have direct access to the server, I assume I can just directly extract the .ZIP files to the web server ? I don't have to FTP, do I? That would seem unnecessary in my situation . . .

2.) Regarding your statement about waiting to upgrade to 9...The reason (other than that our WebWiz version dated from 2004 !!!) that we wanted to update was to be able to make use of some of the features in the newer versions. I think I read in one of these Forums about the one we particularly wanted was available in 8.X :  the moderator being able to approve ALL submitted posts. We are potentially recommending WebWiz and then implementing it for a local town/city website public feedback forum. So of course we would want the ability to screen each and every submitted post BEFORE it goes live.

Just to confirm (as I might have misunderstood) that this feature is available in version 8.x ??

btw, we really enjoy your product and I just figured out about the Polling - we are sure going to use it!

1. You can do it this way, but check after that you have the correct IUSR account permission's on the files as sometime they are not set correctly if you don't use FTP.

2. Yes the full moderation feature were posts can be checked before they go live is available in version 8 and above.

FYI, The version you are using presently here on this site is version 9
