I was looking at the new layout for the list of topics in a forum (forum_topics.asp) and at first I wasn't sure if I liked it.  But then I compared it with the old version, and thought about it a minute and asked myself what information do I normally look for as I look for topics to reply to or read.

The topic starter I noticed was moved under the topic subject.  It used to be in it's own column.  Then I realized that I only look at that column when the topic is new or when I want to see who started a topic, and not every time I post.  So I think it makes sense to make it less prominent.

Then I thought about how you switched the last post date and author, putting the last post author above the last post date, opposite of what is done traditionally.  This too also makes sense, because the first thing I usually look at is whether someone new has replied, and then I look at the date.  So it makes sense to switch those too.

I appreciate you pushing the envelope and making subtle changes that make sense, even though it is not traditionally done that way.

Clap

I agree with this completley, no such thing as progress without people pushing new ideas and changing old ones.

One thing i would say tho -boRg- is that when the last post was today or yesterday, is that it is still prefixed with 'on' so as to read 'Last post on today'.

Yes got to workout how can deal with the Today and Yesterday part, as if the forum is translated it would be hard to identify and make the correct adjustments.

There are also quite a few other little things that you may have missed will hopefully help.

On the main forum index page it now lists the subject of the last topic posted in.

The new post icon is now a little star next to the forum or topic, and if you move the mouse over it it will tell you the exact number of unread posts in that forum or topic. This is also updated as you read through posts.

There is also an un-anwsered topic link on the home page which maybe useful.

Topics now have a Quick Topic Search which can be used for searching for posts in a long multiple page topic.

There is also a number of drop downs such as Quick Search Tool and a Calendar drop down using AJAX to display this months calendar.

Hopefully you have also found the new File Manger in your Member Control Panel, this can be used for uploading images and files to include in your forum posts. It's also linked to the attach file and insert image tools in the post editor.

How about not putting in the "on" at all.... In the Topic / Topic Starter put the date in brackets. In the last posted section, just have it on a new line. I think this would work.

I agree the "on" is unnecessary.  Since its in the "Last Post" column, I think people can figure out that it was posted "on" that date without using the word "on."

I disagree about the brackets though.  No need to surround it with brackets.

That would work for the topics.

In the last post column, you probably want to do:
