Is there any difference in the code between the Access and SQL database types? I know there's a setting in the database_connection.asp file to determine which type of database to connect to.

Yes there are as they use different data types, and much of the SQL code within the forum engine is dynamically re-written depending on various options and database type.

If you change the setting within the connection file it will also inform the rest of the forum engine what database type is being used.
