How about the ability to have multiple calendars and allow users to subscribe to the ones they want? Some sort of ladder system would be good of them, too, so the system can be setup so only certain groups of members can see/access certain calendars.

This type of thing is already in use. As Events are posted as topic, only members with permission to read that topic can see that event.
