Hi,

I've just looked at my active users page and noticed that there is one persons name repeated over and over again, 5 times infact.

The active users page is as it came with the forum, is anyone else having this issue at all?

I guess I could write something to get round it, just want to know if its a bug or anything!

Cheers

Kev

Do you use AOL by any chance? AOL uses some weird proxy setup so when you visit a site AOL's servers hit it up a few times.

If not I will write a workaround script to check if the name has already appeared and remove it accordingly!

Lemme know

There isn't a fix for active user unaccuracy as of now that I know of... The server has a default timeout of 20 minutes.

If a user logs in and logs out right away, it could show them as active for 20 minutes.

The problem is that the code tracks users by IP address instead of username.  If the code were rewritten to track users by username, it would solve the duplication problem.  Guests would still have to be counted by looking at IP addresses because you wouldn't know who they were yet.

Right now the active users list is totally inaccurate because:

  • Users who use AOL or other organizations who have multiple proxy servers with appear more than once.
  • Multiple users behind a firewall will appear as one user because they have the same IP address.

The only way to solve the problem is a total rewrite of the active users module based on usernames instead of IP addresses.  Luckily most of the code for the IP addresses could still be used for Guests, but new code would have to be written for the rest of it.

If people bothred to do a search this has been talked to death a 100 times and I have also mentioned quite a few times that the next version fixes this issue.

Searching does help save people typing the same crap again and again!!!!

Sorry, I didn't realize it was fixed in the upcoming version.  This forum is so busy that it is impossible to read all the posts and notice that.

How about stickying a thread telling us what is coming in the next version.  That way it will always be on top..  Most people won't miss that!

I remember you did write a post on the new version, but for the life of me I can't remember where you posted it.  Sticky would help!
