Because old topics are usually outdated.

The software released through this site is reguarly updated with security updates and bug fixes rendering old posts out of date and useless.

On a general note, sometime people spent a lot of time researching a problem, they find a lengthy discussion (say 3 pages) on how x was fixed. If you now post something like "Where do I copy that file?" someone else would have to re-read the whole thing to actually know what you are talking about.
This is just a specific example of course but should you give an idea next to what Mikey and Info_Tech say.

Thank you, I understand that the major parts of the topics become obsolete quite fast . That's why you don't want us to dig out too much . But it could happen in some rare cases too ... ( for the neverending thread for exemple ( but this one will never become old anyway ..) )
