Topic: Search Not Working

Subject: Search Not Working
Date Posted: 30 August 2007 at 7:52pm
I finally made the plunge and converted from Access to mySQL.  I also upgraded to Premium Edition after, what, 10 years?  Figured it was time to throw a bone to ya.

So, the conversion from access to mysql appeared to go well.  As far as I know, the only thing that is not working is the Search function.  It just returns "Search Error" and "No Results Found".  Any ideas where to look? Maybe I am overlooking something?

Any help appreciated!

just posted in the other topic that mentioned about this

your search related issues i can not see be an issue as it searchs the message field. and thus if had issues with that, you would have issues with other sections too.

do you have a link to where this issue is happening

i have just checked the site you linked to and do see what you mean

i went to a topic and copied a piece of text, i then clicked search and searched on that text.

make sure you have re synced the forum within the admin area then try again.

if not then post back and we will have further thoughts on it.

ummm very weird,

i have just tried on both as you posted it, and see the same issue you mention,

re syncing resets some things but cant see why the search isnt working as it is a search on the message field , i have checked the author too and same, there seems ot be an issue within the upgrading of the system.

Maybe it has something to do with the two forums running on the same server?

possiably but dont think so, are your Forums in the same Application pool within IIS, there is a work around if they are , also make sure the Prefixs are set different within the configuration file, else you can get cross forum collisions with application arrays and veriables.

as far as conflicting with eachther this is what could be likely if is the case, have you tried taking one domain offline and just trying one.

I changed the Prefix in the equestrianpages.com forum to WWF9EQ, stopped and restarted IIS.  No change.
Then I stopped the ufovidmag.com site, stopped and restarted IIS.  No change.

It's Windows2000 IIS5 (I know its old), so not 100% sure on the Application Pool configuration, its set to Default Application in the Home Directory tab.  I've never touched it before.  Scripts Only execution, Medium Pooled for Application protection.  I have the performance bar set to 10,000 or less a day (all the way to the left).  Doubt that has anything to do with it.  Just trying to give you as much info.  Appreciate the help.

thats ok, if the prefixes are different then its not the pool conflicting.

do your login sessions reset often ?

this is weird i am thinking

Sorry, not sure what you mean by login sessions reset?

Its gotta be something server wide it seems or something similar to the configuration of each site.

I tried renaming the global.asa file and doing a search, but I didn't stop and start IIS while doing so.  Going to give that at try and see.

The current global.asa file just appears to have FrontPage db setups from when I was learning how to do basic ASP stuff.

login resetting i ment

=================

when you login without clicking remember me or sometime not, does the forum auto log you out when it shouldn't, like when you login d0oes it say you are still logged out even though it says you logged in ok?

==================

global.asa i cant see be the issue as yet as its not used within the forum and not used within the forum download.

No, every time I go to the forum it says I am logged in and appears fine.  Never have to enter username/password info.  I've only had to login once after the upgrade to version 9.  Users haven't reported anything like that either (though it may take them awhile to do so).

Is there a test search query that I can use in mysqladmin or Navicat to run on the database and see what sort of output (or not) is given?  I tried to look through to code and see if could have been simple, but it appears to be quite a complex query.  Maybe with something like 'horse' in it, as that should produce a lot of hits in the equestrianpage.com forum.

I'm almost leaning towards the possible conversion from Access to mySQL?  Maybe character set issues, like a character that was valid in the Access database isn't in mySQL?  Though I figure Navicat would have said something about that?  Strange though, when converting the database to mySQL, the database itself seemed relatively simple and straight forward.

The only "strange" occurance that I have noticed beyond the search not working, is in the ufovidmag forum, the "UFO->General Disscussion" forum is displayed before the "UFOVIDMAG->General Discussion".  So it would be UFO->General Discussion, then UFOVIDMAG->General Discussion, then UFO->Yakima, then the rest of the UFO area, and the rest of the forums in proper order.  I wonder if that is it. I need to re-order the forums?

When I click within one of the forums, then go back to the Forum Home, it is displayed correctly.  I'd say this happens about once every ten times I view the Forum Home.  I have not observed this behavior on the equestrianpages.com forum at all.

I am using the latest mySQL ODBC that I downloaded and installed prior to the database conversion, update(s).  The week of August 12th.  I hope I am not sending you off on unrelated stuff.

umm

charecters think should be ok, yes you may need to reset the ordering numbers.

i did a search that should have returned results but didn't.

It could be an issue between what was posted in Access and now mySQL.

If you create a new post, now you have moved to a different database system, are you able to do a search for that post? If you are it would suggest the issue is with the way the older migrated data is stored.

Re-ordered the forums and same behavior.

Searching for text within new posts (after the migration to mysql) does not work.  Same result.

Ok, I believe I have discovered and solved the solution.

Bizarrely, another problem manifested itself as well.  I was getting an 800029 Exception at Line 581 in register.asp when a new user would sign up.  Looking through the code, this referenced the Group tables.  I checked out the table via Navicat to make sure that there was no corruption of data (obvious corrupt).  I didn't think there was any since the rest of the forum appears to function properly.

So what I did, was I went through each Group setup, and just updated them all.  Didn't make any changes, just went through the motion of updating each one.

Then to make sure that I actually made changes to the database entry for the default group, I briefly changed it from one to another.

This fixed the sign up error and now users can sign up.

And bizarrely enough, the search now functions!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOALL!

It appears that the database conversion from Access to MySQL using the NaviCat method, you have to get the program to 'update' the database fields at least one time for them to really kick in.  I think I've had to do this for most every type of setting, but it works and I am so very happy that I made the switch.

Word to the newbies... Do not go down the Access DB path.  I can understand us cabbage patchers that have been using WebWiz since the dinosaurs, but it's like buying a Lamborghini with a lawn mower engine.

Thanks DJ Air and Borg for the time you put in to this odd issue.

I also upgraded from Access to mySQL and the search function is not working.
We are recieving the following meessage:

Search Error
No Search Results Found

Only new posts show up in the search results.

I tried to update the forum details in the admin section but that did not work.

Grossi,

This wasn't my problem.  The search never worked for old or new posts.  I suspect that you are having more of an issue of what Borg mentioned in this thread.

I used the Navicat For MySQL method to convert Access to mySQL with default US English installs of all software.

mySQL is very, very different to Access and SQL Server.

The Access and SQL Server versions use a relational database schema, mySQL doesn't support this, so the mySQL version is not relational. Ontop of this mySQL uses many different datatypes.

The mySQL database is very different to the Access and SQL Server databases, which means any migration tool you use is guessing at allot of the conversions, which are not often correct.

If you are wanting to move from Access to a better database the only migration path we would recommend is from Access to SQL Server, using the upsize wizard in Access. We find that the Access 2007 upsize wizard does the job really well.
