Subject: Can't log in after upgrade to 9.04
Date Posted: 03 September 2007 at 7:05pm
I just upgraded to 9.04 and now I can't log in.  Prior to the upgrade I logged in as admin and locked the forum.  Next I deleted all of the old forum files and then uploaded all of the new files.  I ran the database upgrade tool which reported that it was successful.  Now when I go to the admin page and try to log in I get an error saying that the security code entered did not match that displayed - but it does.

If I enter an invlalid user name I get a different error message saying that the user name and or password is invalid.

I have tried two different admin accounts with the same results.  Anyone have any ideas?

You have not mentioned from which version you have upgraded?

You may also have a corrupted file so the first thing to do is reupload the files again and see if that fixes the issue.

I upgraded from version 8.05a.  I have also deleted and re-uploaded the files.  I flushed all cookies and broswer history as well.

This sounds like an issue with the server holding the ASP session and you should contact your web hosts about this and get them to have a look at the server.

I don't know if I would recommend this to other users, but here is what I did.

1) modified the admin.asp source to NOT require CAPTCH when doing the user login.
2) modified the admin_common.asp to NOT check for admin goup level.  For some reason the group level was coming back as 2.

This allowed me to get into the admin pages.  The strange part is that I made no changes to the site (no admin changes).  I just browsed through all the setup pages.  The member ship admin page at first listed NO MEMBERS but after a few minutes I went back to it and now all the members are listed.  Some site settings where not preserved across the upgrade, but now at least it seems to be working.

I backed out the source changes and now the normal login seems to work.  I am currently going through the setup pages to correct things that did not get preserved.

By the way, proper session id's (SID) are not being appended to some URLs with the 9.04 version.  For example, when going to the active user's page, the links for the user's URL's do not have any SID appended.  When attempting to follow the link I get an error saying that I don't have the correct access level (my site does not allow guests to read posts).  Also, there seems to be a similar problem with updating member settings (such as email address) even within the admin pages.

The changes you have made are NOT recommended, as you are now wide open to hackers and have changed some fundamental parts of the security system for the forum.

If you are seeing SID appended to the end of URL's then it means that your forum is not correctly settings cookies which is why you are having all the problems you mention.

What you should do is reupload the original files again, and then edit the includes/setup_options.asp file and set it to use the alternative way of setting the cookie path that is within this file.

I agree that the changes are not recommended.  I only left them in for a couple of minutes until I could login in normally.

Your suggestion to change the cookie path setting seems to work.  There is no more SID field at the end of the URL's and members can now change their profiles without being logged out.

ThanKs for the help!
