When I insert a £ sign into a newsletter I get a strange 'A' figure in front of the £ sign  does not appear in the preview but turns up in the test email i send. any suggestions

Sounds like an encoding issue, if your client browser is using a different page encoding to the email client things like this can happen.

Try editing the file includes/browser_page_encoding_inc.asp and selecting a different page encoding which maybe more compatible with your email client program, then typing the £ sign again.
