I've extracted my concern from an existing thread to here.

Borg, you mentioned that I am seeing the odd weird character (such as 'A hat') in email notifications as my client is using the wrong encoding. Sure enough, when I switch my standard installation of Outlook 2003 to use UTF-8 on a posting from this forum everything appears fine.

However, I'm certain you don't intend all forum members using Outlook (and probably other clients) to change the encoding for each forum email they receive so some part of the solution is missing for me at the moment.

I guess the encoding is supposed to be determined by an indicator within the message.
Emails from this forum seem to be recognised as Western European (ISO) as are CNN's messages...however messages from Skype are being recognised as Unicode UTF-8. Is the UTF-8 indicator missing from forum emails?

Let me know if I need to try something or help by providing further info.

I looked at the header of a forum email (which is html) and there was no encoding defined however the third line of the html (when saved to desktop and opened in notepad) was:

<META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

I looked at the header of a Skype email (which is plain text) and the following encoding statement appears (clearly, there is only text in the file itself):

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8
I hope this helps.

In the present version encoding is not set in the emails. It has to be done at the component level and is different for each email component that is supported.

It will be looked at for future versions to be able to set the encoding with the email component for those email components which support this.
