Subject: Unknown users!!!

I have a small problem!

I have now been runing the forum for about a month, with no problems at all!!! (infact the beta 4 version!!!)

I now, I suddenly, have alot of UNKNOWN users in the activ user list.

Why????

I have taken at short look at the tblactivuser in the access database, an these users seem to have the same ip-range - eks. 85.87.12. - and the som different random numbers...

Is there anyway to stop this, without disable the activuser function or opgrading to 7.01??

Can I block these ipīs, som they do not get access the the forum at all??

Thank you in advance!

With robots you can control what pages they access by adding a robots.txt file to your web site. Check the robots web site for more information about controlling the robot via META tags and robots.txt.

Personally I would prefer googlebot comes and indexes my pages and puts them in the Google search engine.

I hope he comes by and visits mine.

GoogleBot, hey, follow these links down here below this text.

Well good then.. cause GoogleBot is ALWAYS at my place!!  In fact, he's there right now!!

Hey Wistex, ya want me to send him your way when he's done with mine?!

My members were getting concerned, they thought we had an overload of lurkers.. and one person kinda got a bit 'worried/anxious' over the whole thing.  but sometimes we can have 23-30 show up!  I have that great Navigation MOD and have the Active Users turned on, so my members could see everyone online..   so I had to assure them it was OK.. and even GOOD.. but then klr3's post kinda made me doubt what I told them!

Yeah, whenever I see unknown for the OS and browser and active 0 minutes, I typically assume it's just some bots.

And yeah, send him my way.

so what's it mean when he's there for 114 minutes??

could that mean someone is using Googlebots IP?

Google will index all your pages, so he may visit more than once.

well.. here's a perfect example..

Guest 1 September 15 2003 at 8:43pm September 15 2003 at 9:18pm 35 minutes Unknown Unknown
Guest 2 September 15 2003 at 8:44pm September 15 2003 at 9:18pm 34 minutes Unknown Unknown
Guest 3 September 15 2003 at 9:10pm September 15 2003 at 9:17pm 7 minutes Unknown Unknown
Guest 4 September 15 2003 at 8:41pm September 15 2003 at 9:17pm 36 minutes Unknown Unknown

just funny how sometimes he's there for  '0 minutes' but yet here he is for 35, 34, 7, 36 all at the same time.. and this is a lite visit.. :)

I am not complaining.. cause I think it helps our traffic.. we seem to do pretty well with the stream of newbies coming in!!

They may or may not be Google.  They may be some other bot.  Unless you checked the IP ranges, you would not know.

Yes, they could be Google or other search engines (good), or email harvesters (bad).

We get both on a reasonably regular basis, with Google being the most frequent visitor, then Inktomi (?I think it's spelled?) and others. When the active visitors jumps to around 30, it's a good indicator of robot activity. We do a quick IP check in the stats to make sure it's "safe" visitors rather than hackers; If it's the latter, the IP gets banned!

Mmmm....

What you seem to be forgetting about google is one thing. If you have guest access denied on your forum googlebot will be refused entry like an ordinary user who doesn't have access, and rightly so because we don't want private areas all over the web.

If the googlebot is on your site for more than 5 mins, once a month, then the chances are it is doing a deep crawl. If the googlebot is on longer than 15-20 mins then chances are it isn't the googlebot unless you have a mountain of a web site.

As for the googlebot visiting your site several times a week?

No. Highly unlikely.

Worth further investigation if a robot comes more than once a month.

As for the active user thing, I have never seen that issue on my forum in 3 years online.

I find that the google bot hits this site almost daily and updates it's casche of the site on Google around once a week depending on the section of the site.

Google bot follows links from other sites so the more links from other sites the more often your site will get visited.

God_Struth, we get googled way more frequently than monthly, for the reasons -boRg- states. Plus there's assorted other search robots. We always investigate anything that looks even remotely dodgy, which is how we know this and also how we've identified and banned several would-be hackers!

What are the symptoms of a hacker crawling your site?  You must be using more tools than just looking at their IP address.
