Hi,

We upgraded to 9.0.6 a few days ago (from a really old version of WebWiz). We transferred over the users from the old tblauthor manually, but we've turned off the encryption.

But we have a lot of users who are unable to login. I can replicate this - I look up in the database and then try logging in using their credentials.

As soon as I run an update query on tblAuthor to change the password I can successfully login.

There were 126 emails over the weekend from users unable to login (some of those because they forgot their password, but most are saying they've got a password reminder email and still it doesn't work).

Which is really bizarre. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks
Dan

The problem maybe because you have disabled encryption of passwords. This is not recommend and more than likly has coursed the issues you mention.

We had no choice to turn off encryption (we have 90,000 users, resetting everyone's password and emailing them wasn't feasible).

In the setup file, there is this comment:
'If you do disable Encrypted Passwords - You will also need to directly edit the database to type in the admin password to the Password field in the " & strDbTable & "Author table at record position 1 also edit both common.asp files to change this variable
I am looking for this variable in other common.asp files but can't find it. Is this no longer relevant?

Thanks

You shouldn't need to reset the passwords.

If you have a version 6.x forum that doesn't have encryption the migration tool will automatically encrypt the passwords for you.

If you use version 7.x or above then passwords will be already encrypted.

Disabling encryption is not recommended and may lead to issues in the running of your forum.

Version 6 was released in 2002, before then for the first 6 months it was called surf-net forum, so it it has web wiz forums anywhere within it then it is a version 6 or above. Version 7 was released around the end of 2003.
