Hello:  I've just installed all the files, to the best of my knowledge, but don't have things working properly yet.

I've just discovered the sentence, "
This may not be the same user that you have used in your SQL Server connection string!" on the msSQL_server_setup.asp page however, I did try to use the same user to login with the form on this page.

Would merely trying to log in corrupt anything?  I'm waiting for help from my web host in creating the new, blank database.

I guess I'm not finished after all.

Regarding msSQL_server_setup.asp

I tried the passwords for the database that I know, that is, the ones for the existing database I'm upgrading from.  At first, I copied the password wrong, but after I got it right, one time only, I got the message Congratulating me.  However, it wouldn't let me into the database setup, so I'm uncertain of what to do.

When you say, "This may not be the same user that you have used in your SQL Server connection string!" do you mean you may, or you may not? or do you mean you CAN not?

When you create you database, you also create a database user to connect to that database. This user *may* just have data read/write access, so cannot create tables, etc.

The message you see is warning you that should use an account that has sufficient privilages.

If you have configured the user on SQL server and given database owner rights, then it should work.

Hope this helps.

I did, thank you.

I think that I must have made some mistake, when I try to long in subsequently, I get the messages

"...Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'tblAuthor' with unique index 'User_code'. SQL Server database is set up, but with Error!"

Should I delete the contents of the database directory, then restore it and  run the database server setup again?

If it a new install, then yes. Sounds like it's half worked and when you run the set up script again it trying to install the default admin and guest accounts again (hence the duplicates).

It's not a new install exactly, that is I'm upgrading and the database I'm going to is a used one.

I did delete the database and ran the setup program and got the message:  Congratulations, the SQL Server Forum database is set up and Ready to Go :)
 but
when I try to open my forum I ge the message:

Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a01f4'

Variable is undefined: 'strAppPrefix'

/functions/functions_date_time_format.asp, line 57

Okay, I got it.  That is, I have a forum online.  That is, I have a forum online at my website that doesn't include any of my version 7 forums or topics.  How to I restore those?  I backed everything up, but I don't know how to find what I want.

If you are upgrading from a previous version of Web Wiz Forums you do not use the mssql_server_setup.asp file.

Instead, if you are upgrading from another version 9, you just replace the ASP files and images with those from the latest version.

If you are upgrading from a version 7 or version 8 then you use the tools found in the Database Upgrade Tools zip file that you get with the latest version. This zip file also contains a readme.txt file which explains how to use the tools.

Okay, that got me really close, but not quite.

I ran the Microsoft SQL Server v7 to v9 Update and here's what I got:

Stage 1: Database Connection..... Complete

Stage 2: Creating New Database Tables and Fields.....
Error Updating the Table tblForum
Column names in each table must be unique. Column name 'Sub_ID' in table 'HomesteadUser1.tblForum' is specified more than once.

Then a page full of these for each table, then at the end, this:

Complete

Stage 3: Creating Index's on database.....
Error Creating one or more Index's
There is already an index on table 'tblSession' named 'Session_ID'.

Complete

Stage 4: Entering default values for new fields..... Complete

Stage 5: Populating Database with Default Forum Permissions (this may take some time to complete).....
Permissions are reset to original defaults, you may need to update them once the upgrade is complete.
Complete

Stage 6: Populating Database with Forum Statistics (this may take some time to complete).....Complete

Stage 7: Populating Database with Topic Statistics (this may take some time to complete)..... Complete

Error Discription: There is already an index on table 'tblSession' named 'Session_ID'.
Web Wiz Forums database is set up, but with Error!

I'm guessing that I get my host to delete everything from the database directory, then restore the backed-up database and try again.  Am I headed in the right direction?

Yea it does sound like the upgrade has already been applied and possibly failed previosuly.
Try it from your backup and see if you get any further.

Where you went wrong was using the database setup tool on an already existing database, this tool is only for new installs.

What you will need to do is go back to your original version 7.x database backup (the one before you ran the database setup tool), then run the database upgrade tool on the database.

So I deleted the database, restored it and ran MS SQL server V7 to V9 etc.

It gave me another series of messages saying that n o such tables could be found and when I ran it again, it told me that, for example, "Error Creating the Table tblSession
There is already an object named 'tblSession' in the database."

This completed with lots of such warnings but didn't mention being set up with errors.

Anyway, now when I try to run default.asp, I get this:

Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occurred while executing SQL query on database.
Please contact the forum administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_SQLServer_get_forum_data
File Name:- default.asp

Error details:-
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Invalid column name 'Last_topic_ID'.

Very frustrating.  Do I need to start from the very begining or what?

It's possible that some of my forum members might have tried to re-register while the above was going on.  I assumed that the "new" version of the old database would just write over them, but perhaps this is part of the problem?

Right now, there's only the server error message coming up, so if I do it again, they won't be able to do that again.

STOP SLOW DOWN YOU ARE NOT READING THE INSTRUCTIONS AND ARE DOING IT ALL WRONG!

You need to go back to your original unmodified database, if you are getting an error saying that tblSession already exists then you are either using version 8 or you have run the a version 9 database setup against this database.

Once you find your version 7 unmodified database, you then need to follow the database upgrade tool instructions. These mention that you have remove your version 7 asp and images files and to prevent users from using your forum while the database is upgraded, it also mentions that you can not use an older version (ie 7 or 8) with a database upgraded to version 9, or you will get a corrupted database.

You also need to run any database tools ONLY ONCE, running it again will make things worse! If it fails the first time, then you need to find out why, before rolling back to the original database and starting again.

There is no reason why you should get any errors at all, infact getting errors is very rare and are usually because someone has not followed the instructions.

Well, I am reading the instructions, but I won't quibble with you that I'm getting it all wrong.

I am working from the original v.7 database which I backed up from the begining.

Here's what I did.  Before I began the upgrade, I backed up all my ver. 7 files as well.  Then I deleted from the server the default.asp file but did not delete the image files.  My reasons for doing this were that I didn't see the reference to image files (and can't find it now) and my old ver. 7 uploads file took 2 days to back up it was so large.

It's still that large, but I'll set about deleting all.  This is the right course, yes?

I apologize for my clumsiness.  I debated where to begin with your instructions because I found the file Readmefirst.txt.  I was unsure whether to read it first or not since it was in a subdirectory below the one simply called, readme.txt.
But first is first so...  Obviously, I made the wrong choice.

So here goes again...

Okay, so I'm starting with an empty directory.

I copy all the v.9 files to it.

Then I restore the v7 database,

THEN I run MS SQL Server v7 to v9 update...

and then follow the directions at http://www.webwiz.net/WebWizForums/kb/mySQL_install.asp

Check?

No

1. Remove all the files for your version 7 forum (accept the Access database file if using the Access version)
2. Run the database upgrade tool
3. Upload version 9
4. Edit the file database/database_connection.asp so that it points to your database

You do not follow the instructions at http://www.webwiz.net/WebWizForums/kb/mySQL_install.asp as these are for a new installations with a new database.

As to why you would be looking at the mySQL instructions I don't know as version 7 did not have support for mySQL. If you are using mySQL then check that you are not using version 8, as mySQL was only supported from version 8 onwards.

The database was backed up before any of this was begun.  Any suggestions?

It occurred to me that I might be upgrading from the wrong version, but I see that the old version I had was 7.7.

The error messages that you have suggest either that you are running version 8 database, or you have already run the upgrade tool on this database.

Have a look inside your original database, if it has a tblSession table, then you are using version 8

If your old forum also has a calender system then you are certainly using version 8 as the calendar systems was only introduced in version 8.

Knowing what version to upgrade to definitely made this a more pleasurable experience.

Thanks for your patience.
