Is it only possible to add things into the calendar if there is a post relating to them?
 
If so, is it possible to hide these posts from all user by select groups but still show the events in the calendar?

To add events to a calender it is done by giving a Topic in a forum an event date. It can not be done to individual posts. If you wanted an individual post to be a calendar event you would need to move that post to a new topic and create the topic as the calender event.

Whether other forum members can see an event in the calender depends on what permissions that user has on the forum that event was created in.

Ok thank you.

I have a forum set for Calendar events, I have then created topics within here for the events and given dates which show in the calendar.

Is it possible for me to hide this forum from public view but still allow all users to see the events in the calendar?
