As a note - sitemap.asp can be added to Google as a sitemap, and doesn't need re-running / saving as an XML file before adding to Google's Webmaster site.

It categorizes your site links like a site map on any site.

Why would I not just use a generic free site map generator? Why google?
(I try to avoid their garbage any time I can, and refuse to install any of their spyware on my desktops, such as their IE add-ins, desktop search (which hammers domain controllers!) and so on)

The Google Sitemap isnt BY google its FOR google.

If you dislike google and dont want any traffic from them you may not need this.

The mod (should) generate a dynamic XML file listing ALL of your threads for google (and other search engines that support it). you would then submit the location of the sitemap to google, yahoo and msn (the ones i currently know off that have control panels) also Ask.com accepts them but you have to add a tag to your robots.txt file for them to pick it up.

Its a great idea for websites so that the search engines can find all your pages and index them, rather than relying on links on your site (which may be quite long eg home page > products > category > product item) but i personally dont see much need on a forum.

for more information you can follow the links below:

  • http://www.sitemaps.org - Site for the people who started "sitemaps" (sitemap.org)
  • http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ - Google Webmaster Tools (site for submitting your sitemaps too)
  • http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com - Yahoos Site Explorer (same as googles link above)

Ah - well, google has no trouble finding our topics!
In fact, a fellow posted a bit about having his car hauled by a trucking company just last night. I did a search on the info he gave me this AM in google - and that post turned up as the first hit! WOW

It would be interesting to see how many sites link TO us, though.... seems there is a tool for that. As far as being found, not a problem so far.

Just that I will never ever install "google software" on any of my computers after seeing what it does in a network environment - and to security/privacy. Nasty stuff, really set off the alarms of the network admins here when the google desktop search started hammering away at their domain controllers!

Just a quick stab
You have
<priority>0.4</priority></url> <font face="Arial" size=2>
should it not read
<priority>0.4</priority></url> <font face="Arial" size="2"> with the speech marks?

Looking at the source, I think that's the error message:

 <font face="Arial" size=2>
<p>Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server</font> <font face="Arial" size=2>error '80040e14'</font>
<p>

On Firefox it renders this error:

Also check out Scottys comments on page 1 of this topic which lend some more information. Plus third party mods like this one may have issues running on version 9.60 which you are now using

I dont believe Stardust visits the forums any more but if you could post the SQL statement and the spec of your forum (eg version and DB type) I will try to help.

Also, has this mod been running successfully before? or have you just installed it?

As MrTWS, this mod was built for an older forum version and may not be compatible with newer releases.

For TWS, Firefox displays that error because is because the file has a XML mime type and so is trying to load it as an XML file, but the font tag is coursing an XML error.

The font tag is from an ASP error which Morti posted.

Cheers StarDust, that's great!

Scotty, cheers for offering to look into it.  I've had it running on my forum for quite a while, but it's one of those things you never really check, and forget to check it works after a forum upgrade.

I'm running 9.60 and MS SQL Server.

If anyone requires it, this is the sitemap.asp code:

[code]<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>

Sorry, I left this since Stardust returned.

I just tried the code you posted above on my forum and it worked fine.

The problem seems to relate to:

strSQL = "SELECT " & strDbTable & "Thread.Message_Date FROM " & strDbTable & "Thread WHERE " & strDbTable & "Thread.Thread_ID = " & lngThread & " ;"

Basically the Thread ID isnt getting passed through, not sure why.

Maybe you could try doing the "Re-sync Topic and Post Count" from the Admin area?
