k... downloaded and installed the SQL version of b3...
installed it again... same problems. It doesn't say beta 2 anymore, but it still says 'access denied' for the configuration and the forum setup.
I think I'll just wait until this is final.

Beta 3 looks great. I do have a bug report. It very well could be a user error but I thought I would share it.
When I created or replying to a topic and at the bottom above the post reply there is the chick box for Enable Forum Codes. If you click on the forum codes link a window pops up with some font info. Under images and links if you click on my link nothing happens and if you click on my email I get a 404 error. Also under the smilies, if you click on one from this window I got a debug error box. The smilies work fine if you just click on them from the reply window. I only get the problem when I click on them from the forum codes window. I even tried it on this form with the same result.
Thanks,

^^^^^^^ I experienced the same as the above poster. Also I dont know if this is a bug but when I use Dundas upload manager if I try to upload a jpeg with an uppercase .JPG extension, the Forum Code drops the file extension completely and the picture doesnt show up in the post.

The forum codes pop up window is not for clicking on to add to your post, it is only there to show you what the forum codes look and display like.

Unless you have 100 odd forums or the server you are on is very overloaded there is noway it would take this long to load up. The new version with the same amount of forums in tests takes less than quater the amount of time to load up over version 6 of the forum as there is many less database queries and only now two recordsets for the page over 6 in the previous version.

At the moment there won't be a mySQL version as it would require q re-write of almost very page to make it run.

Just one question.
I think that the new forum is more better then older one. More security and better design.
But, I have one question:
How can I transfer my old forum database to new forum? I've tried with simple copying old posts into new database, but with no success.
Is transfer of old database possible?
Thank you in advance...

This has been discussed a few times. People are working on an update script and is (hopefully) planned to be out with the final v7. It is beta right now so there is no real reason trying to get it to work with old posts.

Nigel sent me a brilleant one today, I shall try and upload it soon, but it runs off line on your own computer and basically copies all the data across from the old database to the new one, all done in access 2000.
Also as it copies all the data across to the new db it doesn't matter so much about adding a few new fields to the db as it is coping the data across instead on upgrading the old db.

GREAT job. One small problem: Create 2 categories, 2 forums in each category. Create one topic in first forum first category. reply to it. The frum will display Topics 1, Posts 2 for the Topic. Now, move the topic with the reply to another topic, or in another category. The "Topics" and "Posts" will remain for the old place where we don't have the topic anymore, and is 0, 0 for the place we moved the topic in.

Topic and posts counts are recalculated each time a post is made in the forum, for other things sometimes it is not possible like when moving posts, in these times if you cleck on the little admin control panel sign next to a forum you get some extra options (need to be logged in as admin) one of these options is to resync posts and topic counts for that forum. There is also an option in the admin area to resync post and topic counts for all forums.

i ran this script, it carried over most all settings. a few minor things can be reworked, but for the most part, it's great! when it converted, i ran the forums and the member counts were correct but there were zeros in all the forums, so i ran the admin - resync util and they all went back to normal.
Quick question borg, right now i have v6.34 Access - and will upgrade tothe v7 sql2k version. i ran the upgrade, that gave me v7 access, if i do the MS access upgrade util and then pop in the SQL version of the forum files, should i expect or anticipate any big probs? don't know if this has been done, i am goign to try it in a few days.

I all of the started having a problem with my new forum. It was working fine and now I get the following error:
ADODB.Recordset error '800a0cc1'
Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal.
/beta/forum/common.asp, line 226
which is the string blnFlashFiles = CBool(rsCommon("Flash"))
For grins and giggles I downloaded the forum again and tried using the default database and it worked fine. If I use the converted database, i get that error.
if I delete the lines:
blnFlashFiles = CBool(rsCommon("Flash")) blnShowMod = CBool(rsCommon("Show_mod"))
the forums work fine. Any ideas?

After you posted your message I checked mine and it also didn't work.
All you need to do is log on as the administrator and go to the email notification setup area. Configure the information and it will work. Call your web host to find out what email configuration you should use.

Well - so far I've been able to figure out my problems. But there are a few I can't. The first one is when I post a poll, I get the following error:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a005e'
Invalid use of Null: 'CLng'
/forum/includes/poll_display_inc.asp, line 102
I did change my poll options to use up to 25 settings. I don't know if that is what's causing it. If it is, how do I get around that.
-----
Another thing, how do you change the colors in the color dropdown list? I would like to remove the white & yellow colors because I have a white background. I tried just deleting it, but that didn't work. Instead of the colors, it shows me the code.
-----
Finally - from the admin section, I am unable to email members. It gives me the following error:
ADODB.Recordset error '800a0cc1'
Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal.
/forum/admin/member_mailier.asp, line 73
Now, last time I got that error, it was because I was missing some fields in the database. However, I'm unsure of which field I am missing. When I compare it to the database the comes with the forums, it has all the fields.

The full version will be released when I finsh writing it which all depends on how much other work I have to do, how much time I spend in the pub, how much time I spend getting my van together for the summer, etc. etc.

Does V7 maintain the "active users" list anywhere?
I can't see it. While it's clearly not particularly vital to the operation of the forum, I (currently, using v6) find it nice to be able to see who's online at any given time.

It's at the bootm of the main forum page, but it needs enabling in the admin section on access versions of the forum, as access can't cope with the cosntent updates on busy boards required for the active users and so often courses the database to become corrupted.
If you are using the access version I only recommend that you enable the active users list if your forum isn't very busy.

Persits.Upload.1 error '800a001a' Access is denied. /forum/functions/functions_upload.asp, line 113
I configured the the file and image upload configuration. I called my web host and they said to use Persits AspUpload. So that is what I selected. Can anyone explain to me what I need to do to correct this problem.
The instructions say I will need to make sure that the upload folder has write permissions and is inside the root of your website.
How do I give the folder write permissions?

You will have to get your web hosts to set write permissions on the folder, also this error is something that you ought to talk to their support staff about.

What would you say is "isn't very busy"? 10-15 active users? 50-100? Thx!

I'd say with access around 5, if you continuly have multiple users on the board the majourity of the time, don't enable the active users part.

Does anyone know where I can download extra icons for the message forum?

Help for a newbie:
I have set up your beta 7 forum for a group of doctors that want to be able to hold private group discussions that are not accessible to the public.
In an earlier post, I saw someone mention group permissions and the ability to set forum permissions to private. I cannot for life of me find these settings. I found the section where you can password protect a forum and limit access by user type, but nothing where you are setting up group permissions.
BTW: what are Gold and Platinum members?
Any help with making this board bullet-proof is appreciated.
Thanks

For extra icons, I'm guessing you mean smilies?
If so, MadDog has a mod for this at

Any chance of a 'serve beer' or a 'delete knobhead from pub' button on the forum? I'd be eternally grateuful...

i was wondering....
can you add a single person as a moderator?
or does it have to be a Group Level?
like so could you have...
"Moderators: Moderator Group, Member Name, Admin Group"

No. But you could make seperate groups for each person and name them the same as their username. Then set that group's rights to those of moderators. That way it would look like it's showing the individual's name even though it's still showing groups. Also allows for easier ability to make one person admin of one topic but not another.

Maybe you got a corrupted version of the file. Try re-downloading the forum and/or re-uploading the forum or even try to add at language.asp
Constr strTxtLockForumAlert = "u mesg here"

Thx Guys,
I uploaded the forum once more and now it's okay. Somehow something must have been corrupted (not the database, I repaired that)
Second thing I had to do was setup a DNS, somehow the wwf3b doesn't work dns-less (in my case)
well... ev is ok now!

The "Admin Group" by default is not listed under Moderators but able to moderate, right?

Excuse my ignorance but am I able to use beta 3 'msSQL_server_setup.asp' on an existing SQL database WITHOUT DAMAGING EXISTING TABLES & DATA
OR
am I ill advised to use beta 3 on a working version of 6.34??
I've got an 'Active Topics' problem that I would love to leave behind by 'upgrading' to V7b3

you'd be ill advised the setup would fail as it could not create tables that already exist. Wait till the final is out.

id like to request sum stuff
(id like the Forum like "yesterday" like sum people on the site, but hay!)
i think it would be kool if you could add users to moderate a Forum, and not just a "Group" cose sumone said you'd have to set up groups for each person which wouldnt be that good really
damm i forgot the second

Actually, priviledge base on groups make more sense cuz that sorta bases on MS windows
To design your way, one would have to ask "how many moderators do you likely to set up to moderate a forum?" Not many. How are u gonna display them individually on the forum? Not feasible. How are you gonna control all their priviledges? Go into each user and set them? Easier to set a whole group and when there are fewer groups in combination of different priv than there are users of different priviledges.
Sorry if I confuse you.

"boyohboy"
wot i ment was, id like to be able to add "Groups" AND "Users" to Moderate a Forum,
think of it like this, wot if you want lets say "Moderator Group" AND just 1 person to mod a forum? and you only want to have that 1 user mod on that 1 forum?
so you see, id like to have Groups AND Users,
i understand that if you have like over 10 moderatin a forum it would better to use a Group, but wot if you only want just 2 users? and you dont want them to Mod on an other forum?

Then put them in a separate group! Its not hard to do, and allows for adding more members to that group in the future.

It would make it extremly complex, not just from a programming point of view, but also from a user point of view to have two systems, one where moderators can moderate a forum becuase of there group and another sepporate system where you can set individual users to moderate sepporate forums.

umm i was wondering....
why do you have a "Read Only New Posts" icon?
i mean if its Read only there cant be any new posts, cose you cant post to it, there for it dont really make sence... anyone wanna tell me why we have a Locked Topic New Posts icon?
(just as proof ill post it below )
Open Forum [no new posts] |
Read Only [no new replies] |
Password Required |
Open Forum [new posts] |
Read Only [new posts] |
No Access |
|

Well... just because you have Read Only access doesn't mean everyone has...
A different group might have full access to that forum and can happily post all the messages they like, making some new replies for you to read...

no, "Locked" means NO ONE can post, not even the Admin
if you cant post in it, (cose ya lets say a Guest) it has the No Access
so i dont get the "Locked (new posts)" icon
|
Posted By: slave
Date Posted: 15 March 2003 at 2:25pm

I thought that icon legend at the bottom referred to what access you have to the forum - not the locked state of the forum
am i wrong there?

oh oh well i might be wrong, you might be wrong who knows i sure as hell dont
well still if means theres a new post in the topic how can ya have a new post in a closed topic?

hang on... i was wrong... if you have read only access to a topic it still shows the normal topic icon...
BUT
maybe since last time you visited there were some new replies and THEN the topic was locked
that would explain it
i think
i dunno i'm confusing meself now...

Quite easy really.
The Topic is locked as at the time you are viewing it but contains Posts you have not read and you are not prevented from so doing. Therefore, it may not have been locked when you last viewed the Topic but in any event someone HAS been able to post since.
A Moderator can unlock, reply and relock immediately of course.
Hope this helps Nigel
