I've been doing web marketing for many many years (some of my clients are large corps, some are same businesses).
Here's the deal with meta tags.
Search engines want people to use their search engine (so they can make lots and lots of money Wink.

So if you give people what they are looking for, and you do some straight forward SEO, the engines will put you up there. BUT, in the passs SEO guys tried to take advantage of the engines and spammed the meta tags trying to trick the engines.

It's better to get a small amount people looking for your product or service than 1000's who were tricked into visiting.

The engines tried many things to beat the black hat guy,
link popularity - It started as a good idea (they figured if it was a good site people would link to it, but that didn't work - link farms popped up all over the web.

The engines have to work harder to give people what they are searching for now. So meta tags aren't as important as they used to be, but they are important.
The problem with most dynamic sites is the lack of unique meta tags (not to mention long dynamic links - Google has the capability to read most dynamic links now)

So in order to get good ranking you need to have your meta tags relevant to the page content (no it's not a thing of the pass, like a lot of seo guys will tell you)

If the same meta tags show up in every page, the engine indexs the first page, then skips the rest, unless it really contains some unique stuff.

Here's an example of a site that has over 5000 keyword phrases in the top ten -
in google "forex video"     http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=forex+video - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=forex+video  forextips.com
Note that the meta tags appear in the listings (Title and description)

On the other hand if all the tags are the same when Google comes through it will choke after the first link
Example: This image shows what Google did when it spidered the site - note that only one page of the cart was spidered (it had no way of making unique meta tags for individual categories or products - I had not installed the meta tag mod yet). The 0.00% is bad.

Image of spider coming through - http://www.sawgrasspe.com/1/googlespider.jpg - http://www.sawgrasspe.com/1/googlespider.jpg

A forum is an important addition to some sites, and WWF is easy to install, works great, has great features, easy for clients to administer and is reasonably priced.

But if WWF had a dynamic meta tag mod for at least categories, the engines wouldn't think it was a black hat job and continue indexing. I understand that WWF v10 will have dynamic meta tags, (I will have to upgrade my clients sites, but it's such a pain in the butt to upgrade, particularly if modifications have been made to the early version.

I'm not a ASP coder, but if anyone knows how to at least get the forum title in "A" meta tag, I can adjust the forum title to make it my meta title, description and keywords.

Tit's a jump on the competition. I have no coding skills so if you could post the mod code it sure would be helpfull - I'll use WWF10 for new clients.......Wink

Creating a meta tag mod for each an every forum and forum topics will require extensive re-coding of the wwf scripts. Ant this is strictly against the terms of WWF.

However, I'll see how I can create a meta tag generator for the categories.

Dynamic meta tag are already under development for version 10.

If you view the source ode of this page you can see the first part of the implementation using the Topic title as the meta description. This is only the first part as there will also be keywords included, built on a number of things including keywords set for the forum and built from keywords related to the topic.

Version 10's dynamic meta tags are now complete and being tested on this web site.

They allow you to setup meta tags and keywords from within the online admin area, as well as other settings such as disabling sessions for Search Engines and putting nofollow into hyperlinks submitted by users to put off link spammers.

The dynamic meta tags are available within forums were they use the description of the forum as the meta description and the default keywords assigned from the admin area.

With Topic pages like this, the first 100 characters of the first post are used as the description, the subject is used as both the title and is spilt to also make the keywords.

On Topics with multiple pages the page number is also included in the title for the page, so that search engines can easily identify different pages.

WebWiz-Bruce (aka -boRg- Wink) This meta tag thing is a really a handy utility to WWF. Thank you.

Can you tell us the release date or push the date sooner? Big%20smileHug

It should be by the end of next month, but depends allot on how long it takes to code the blogging tools.

The new dynamic meta tags for this topic for example look like:-

<meta name="description" content="Dynamic Meta Tags - plz" />
<meta name="keywords" content="mod, req, dynamic, meta, tags, web wiz forums, bbs, support, asp, asp.net, bulletin board, discussion, newspad, CAPTCHA, RTE" />

Bruce, if someone has the paid version of WWF, is the 'web wiz forums' tag removed from the keywords...or is this part of the dynamic features?

i added the feature to add "tags" to a thread. i.e. you could use this tags as information for meta tags?

the other reason why i did this is the tag cloud, which was wanted by users *g*

pinkfluffybunny,

I can feel your need for the mod. I remember back 3-4 years ago, i needed a photo gallery mod with WWF and i couldn't find what i needed.

I told you, i am a bit stuck. cannot sit in front of my PC, if you do not find this mod, for sure i'll make it for you.

We, the mod developers, are here to support WWF and its users because we love WWF. And also, for some ppl, it is the only way to give back what they took from WWF.

Here's why it's so important - here is a pic of the Google spider coming thru - http://64.62.146.157/1/googlespider.jpg - http://64.62.146.157/1/googlespider.jpg  - it spidered the first page of the cart then choked (that had no meta tag mod) 0.00% is not good.

I put in a meta tag mod for the lady's cart and next time that pecky spider came it, ate it all up.....

Are you sure that's Google Spider, and not visitors clicks?

Man, someone develop this for v9.x There's no way we're upgrading to version 10, just way to many mods on version 9 to even consider it. Anyone else in this same boat?

Is it fair to ask for what would need to be modified from the version 10 to make it fit for version 9 Bruce? That would be huge for a lot of people I suspect.
