I am a member of a certain forum that uses Web Wizard Version 7.9 and am curious about a problem we apparently have on the site.

A few of us started a thread that was for entertainment purposes.. jokes and such.. with other members.  The thread itself got to about 9 pages when the administrator closed the topic on us telling us that the thread was too long and that we had to start a new one.  Upon discussing this in private with him, as many of us (after 8500+ views), really enjoyed these posts by various members, he explained that apparently if threads get too long, it slows the server down.  Is there any validity to this?  And if so, isn't there a better way to resolve that issue rather then closing the thread on us?
This is the way he explained it to me.

"Also, from a technical standpoint (as stated previously), it is more efficient to have multiple threads. When you go and view a topic, it requires the server to fetch the messages from the database, string them together, and present it to you as a web page.  The more messages it has to string together, the higher the server load becomes and the slower the whole thing gets.  You may have noticed that things have become slower on this system."

Just curious Smile

We have Topics on this site with over 500 pages without any problems and page processing times of 0.04 seconds.

However, version 7.9 about 5 years old and since then many improvements in performance have been made, so the forum should really be updated.

The type of database used also has allot to do with it. SQL Server and mySQL can handle many 1000's of simultaneous users and very large forums and topics. But if the webmaster has installed the Access database version then this is very limited and can not handle as many users or as much data.
