Subject: Login problems

Hi
I am a member of a webwiz forum at www.AgeNet.co.uk.
I have experienced countless login problems over the past few months, getting the username/password incorrect error message and eventually having to contact the administrator for help.
I am no computer novice and have lots of internet accounts requiring the login protocol, banks, other forums, photobucket, YouTube, etc. etc.
The only login problem that I have ever had is with the AgeNet(WebWiz) site and despite several changes of usernames and passwords the login problems remain.
I have found that, after problems and when I have obtained a new password, upon checking my profile that my email address has become corrupted and has needed re-inputting to correct it.
My FireFox/IE7 browsers are set-up correctly and cookies are acceptable.
The administrator is convinced that the problem lies with me, but I think differently...if it were so then I would surely have similar login problems with other sites....but that is not the case.
In desparation I have come to you to see if you have any ideas how we can resolve the  issue......help please !!

From your comment about the corrupt email address I don't think you are going mad. Ask the site admin if they use an Access database. I read somewhere these can become corrupted...

The only problem with logging in i know of is in IE the cookies can sometimes become corrupt meaning you need to delete your cookies to log in. which i dont think is the case here.

If you are the only user facing this issue then it is reasonable to assume the problem is with your self.

Could you please expand on what you mean by your email address being currupt, do you mean a completely different email address?
or your email address is either trimmed or distorted (eg "y&123;urname@d&234;main.c>m")

If it is that your email address is changed to somebody elses then it could be that your getting hacked. either check that you are using a strong password (numbers and letters in different cases eg "AbC123DeF456"

Also if the problem continues you could ask the admin if they could check your last visit date to check this corresponds with your actual last visit to make sure you havent been hacked.

Older versions of Web Wiz Forums did sometime show cookie issues with IE's cookie cache becoming corrupted.

These problems have been eliminated the latest releases by improved cookie handling, and although not as secure, cookies are mow not updated very often.

You should ask the forum admin to make sure they are running the latest release, currently 9.07, released on the 23rd of Jan 08

I would agee with you if I had had problems with other internet accounts....but my computer is not selective and cannot choose an account to 'fall out with' !

The email address was distorted i.e. one letter missing !

I am not being hacked at least not from my end....it is possible for my email address to be tampered with by a moderator ?

One letter missing from the email address could be bad evidence (a red herring) then. Unless the forum has email driven registrations it might have been wrong when you first entered it. Yes a moderator (actually the administrator) COULD change the address but unlikely they would make an accidental change.

Did you delete your cookies?

Did you determine if its the MS Access (not SQL Server or MySQL) version?

Is there anything unusual (long, strange characters, etc.) about your login name or password?

Hi Nick
I had made that error when I originally registered and subsequently made the correction when I added an avatar and updated my profile. It reverted to the uncorrected version three times when I got the login problems over a few weeks !

I know that the administrator can make changes to email addresss but is the facility available in the moderators CP ?

I didn't delete any cookies...but even if I had have done it would not give these problems I would simply have been offered a new cookie and it would have been accepted.

I have not determined if its the MS Access (not SQL Server or MySQL) version?....I can only go so far in quizzing the administrator...he is getting sick of me !
However this is what he has said.....

Over 100,000 sites use the same software including

BulletHewlett Packard
BulletSony Service Centre
BulletXerox Corporation
BulletBritish Telecom
BulletSymantec Corporation
BulletSony Ericsson
BulletSysinternals
BulletBosch Automotive
BulletKodak Canada Inc
BulletMicrosoft Certified Pro
BulletDixons Stores Group
BulletAlien Skin Software
BulletBank of America
BulletUniversity of Hawaii
The servers we use run Intel Pentium Dual Core processors and the software is the current market leader, Windows server 2003.  I can't tell you which other professional organisations use the same server farm but I can assure you that they wouldn't tolerate less than the best available service.  Given the annual hosting charges we pay, neither would we.

My login name is scooby and my password is six digits one of them numeric.

The problem is intermittent and only with this webwiz account.....at present everthing is OK but today I keep getting unexpectedly logged-out and having to login again, and again, and again !!
Thanks very much for trying to help me I really am grateful !Smile

scooby, can you write down the email that you found corrupt?

I haven't heard anything like that before, like stripping a character in wwf v8.04. That was pretty stable version concerning to formatting characters. Then, there was nothing wrong like stripping a character in the WWF v8.04 scripts.

If it was not you, then it has to be something wrong with the character set encoding of the site and you have nothing to do with that.

when you corrected your email address did you change your password? or was it the same for the entire length of your account.

As it could be they had to restore the database back to an earlier time?

My password has had to be changed so many times I forget now if I changed it or not.
The administrator has has to remove my username and ' purge the database' (his words not mine) on more than one occassion
I have had four usernames..
Scoobie
Scoobiedoo
Scooby....and sometime later (as a back-up)....
Scooby2....this one was only used once shortly after registration then the login problems also started with it and it was removed by the administrator
Recently, over the last few days, I have had no log-in problems....other than having to keep logging-in when the site logs me out unexpectedly over and over again.

Yes it was like this snobieloodbie@yahoo.co.uk the red highlighted character had been left out of the original registration entry by me but after a few days I corrected it, when I discovered that I had input it wrongly, whilst updating my avatar.

It sounds like cookie issues especially as you keep getting logged out.

Make sure that cookies are enabled in your browser. With version 8 cookies are updated quite often so do tend to sometime course cookie corruptions in IE. To fix it delete alltemporyt internet files then all cookies.

Upgrading the forum to the latest version should also help as cookies are not updated so often and there are new cookie handing functions which also improve things.

8.04 is quite old now and it is recommend that the forum be updated to the latest release 9.08. This latest release is a security release and it is recommended that ALL users upgrade to this version.

Thanks Bruce for that.
I regularly delete all temp files as part of my general housekeeping using CCleaner.
Of course cookies are enabled in both my browsers IE7 and FireFox and I can only repeat  that AgeNet is the ONLY site that causes problems...all my other internet accounts requiring log-in protocol (and therefore cookies) work fine.
Thanks again for your help and advice

scooby, as i said, there might be something wrong at their end and i do not see a reason for you to worry.

Bruce is the dev of WWF and he knows better than me. But I am sure WWF v8 did not have any issue like stripping a char from email or any issue with oo (double o) formatting.

And the famous cookie problem, it's been history now :)

Thanks Stardust.....I will see if the problem continues and if it does then I will post again and tell you.
You are all very kind to concern yourselves with such trivia ... I am sure that you have far more important things to occupy your time !

Now what is really amazing is that each time I return to this particular WebWiz forum I am already logged-in and do have to go through any login procedures....which further reinforces my belief that the AgeNet software is at fault !!

Small idea....do a proper login not a Quick Login.
