Hi, I wonder if anyone could tell me more about the limitations of an access forum. I would like to run a forum on my site and yet I see from looking around that there are limitations to access.

How relevant in reality are these limitations?

My site gets up to 20,000 unique visitors a month and if they were to browse the forum for topics would there be a problem or is it only when people are posting questions and replying?

If it is so limited why is there an access version?

Any advise would be great.

The reason for now for an access version is that it is useful for test purposes as it is faster to setup so you can quickly test Web Wiz Forums without having to install mySQL or SQL Server.

There are also many hosts who offer very cheap basic packages that still do not offer decent database support and these people have no choice but to use Access.

8 years ago when Web Wiz Forums was created the only real database support you had on Windows without paying $$$$$ was Access, things have moved on since then what with mySQL and SQL Server Express making the whole seen change. One of the main reasons for keeping Access is legacy support, but are considering dropping support for Access as it does hold back future development. It also seems that MS are dropping support with no x64 JET driver for Access.

If you have 20,000 visitors per month do not use Access, as it is a desktop database, and not designed web applications.

If you want more info for not using Access in a web environment you should do a search on Google, as I could go on with a 100 page article about all the technical limitations and bad effects it has on web server and web site performance, however to shorten it down the simple answer is NEVER use Access in a web environment unless you have no other choice.
