and at what risk or impact?

We have had to create a rule where members must have 10 or more regular posts before they can post in the for sale area. This is to prevent "drive-bys" and people from joining just to post junk for sale or reduce spamming.
Once they make 10 posts, they climb the ladder and can then post in the for sale area.

We have a member who we trust and is a valid supporter of the forum, and sells new auto interiors and supports the AMC community by reproducing interiors for our uncommon cars.
We'd like to allow him to post even before 10 regular posts elsewhere.

what's the best way to do that? Can I go into his profile and modify the "number of posts" - would that break anything?

You could modify his post count or you could edit the member permissions for this member a create a unique set of permissions for this user to be able to access this forum.
