We've just set up a new forum and when we go to the admin area and send a test message, it gets delivered perfectly.

When a user subscribes to a forum, however, when a new topic is added or a reply posted to a topic no email is getting sent to the user.

Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Contact your SMTP mail server admin and ask them what relay restrictions that have in place for sending to non-local email addresses.
