Subject: Upgrading wipes out any modifications?

Hi everyone -

I'm in the process of launching a site with a licensed copy of Web Wiz Forums.  Since my site is a retail site and much more than just a forum, my developers apparently had a very tough time getting the Web Wiz forums to integrate seamlessly with my existing ASP design and CSS.   After a number of hours, they finally were able to get it so the forum works seamlessly within my current site without opening in a new window.

Anyways, I brought up the topic of upgrading since I'm on version 9.06 and I see that 9.08 is released and they replied that any upgrade would wipe out all the modifications they had done.  They said my choice is either to never upgrade or to accept the fact that the forum will have to open in its own window since the modifications were too complex to repeat for every upgrade.

Can anyone help me understand the upgrade process and whether or not there is a way around this?  It seems crazy to me that an upgrade would wipe out all the custom modifications that have been made to a site and that there's not a way to avoid rewriting your code with every upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

When you do an upgrade you need to replace the files, obviously the forum wont come with your custom modifications - so it will remove them.

Upgrading between V9.06 and V9.08 shouldnt be much of a problem - though it depends on which files were edited in the modding. When you upgrade between small versions such as these you dont need to overwrite ALL files - only the ones that have changed, which is only around one or two.

Also, your developers could apply the patchs by reading the Version History to see what needs to be updated.

Only problem is when V10 comes out - then you will need to replace most if not all of the files.

Usually when your developers do the web site integration the only files that they change are the header.asp, footer.asp, and the CSS files. These files rarely change so by updating the changed files should keep your site integration.

If peeps prefer 9.08 can they stay with that instead of upgrading to version 10? For example, I host my forum on a Web Wiz package, so do I get a choice about upgrading or do I have to accept version 10 without any say so?

It's always wise to document changes or mods you make to software like this.
One tool that helps is windiff or whatever it's called. You drag two files to it, the original, and the one you changed, and it points out the differences. You then document those differences. If that is done, it's not so hard to know which files changed, what the changes were, and use some automation to put your changes back, IF the mods will work with the NEW version.
Inside major versions, meaning say from 9.0x to 9.0y, few files change, and the changes are usually minor, so it's not so tough.
I found most of our mods made to 8.xx are going to port right over to 9.xx and in fact, most have already been applied in my home sandbox setup.
Some were actually easier to reapply in 9 than they were to make work in 8. Funny how this software just keeps getting better and cleaner.

If you host your site with Web Wiz you do get free upgrades to the latest version, but as many people like yourself do make changes it is not automatic. Those who do want their forum updating to the latest version need to contact support and ask for the upgrade.

Thanks for that Bruce Wink
Is there any word on when version 10 will be released yet?

There is still allot of development work to do on it, so it will be some time yet. At the moment we are having to switch development to a new version of Web Wiz CAPTCHA as some spam bots have worked out some of the predefined images. Looking instead at building a version that builds the images on the fly from random numbers and letters.
