We allow folks to check if they want a notification of replies to topics or messages. The forum sends an email stating that there is a reply to the topic xxxxx and they can click a link, etc. Problem is, a few folks reply to that email! Example, user A posts they have a xxx for sale. USer B posts in the topic "let me know how much" and checks they want to be notified of replies or posts. So when user A comes back and responds, user B gets the email from the forum. Seems a few folks then hit reply to that email, so we see replies in the webmaster inbox! Problem is, they probably wonder what's up and why no one responded to their email reply.
Any ideas??

Not much can be done really, the email notification already says not to reply to the email and they need to go to the forum to reply. Apart from sticking it in 12foot high letters so they don't miss it, but then as they say 'if you make something idiot proof they make a better idiot', so there is no winning really.

I've just remembered one thing you could do, in the email settings page there is an option to disable the post being sent with the email notification. That way all the person would see is a message saying there is a post on the forum and they need to go to the forum to read it.
Probably won't be very popular with those who like to see the post in their notifications, but would stop those few people who try replying to the email.

Bruce,
I have a few suggestion if I may. May be you should consider using two
email addresses in the board. One for receiving administrator
notifications for the forum admin and another just for sending emails
from the system.
That is, email subscriptions will be sent from [forum_noreply]@[email].[domain]
and administrative notifications will be sent to [admin_notify]@[email].[domain]

Yeah, but you could use a different address for every single function and person, but folks will still hit that reply button, then you have mail going into THAT inbox and sitting. Even if you automatically dump every message that address then receives, folks will wonder "I replied to that email, why hasn't someone gotten back to me yet". OR, they will complain "I responded but it just bounced, what's wrong with your email." Unless you have it auto-respond "you are an idiot responding to a no-response email" which is what it's really tempting to do! Yeah, I guess that other address [forum_noreply]@[email].[domain] would be a cool option, one could put an auto-reply message in there telling them they need to READ more closely next time or get new glasses.

The suggestion is something i thought would be better than current
situation. A mailbox that is never checked or the incoming mails
rejected. Auto reply will not be a better option. Rather ignoring every incoming mail or bouncing it back will be better.
A simple single line footer along with the subscription like "This
account is not monitored. Replies to this email will never reach a
human." or a better meaningful line. Than is how they do.
And isn't it when there is no perfect solution, we search for a relatively better one?
