Subject: Programming a shopping cart
Date Posted: 28 July 2008 at 8:31am

I am almost done developing this e-commerce site and my client just asked me to add a shopping cart. I have some templates, but I want to start from scratch, is there a specific way of starting to do it? What should I consider when building a shopping cart?

Don't mean to be rude but if you don't know how to write a shopping cart - don't do it or at least read up VERY well on it. They are way to easy to be exploited and you are dealing with others' money.

If you are wanting to write your own then the first thing to think about is how you are going to be storing the customers order, this is done in an array.

When someone adds an item to there cart the array is updated, on checkout you gain more information on the customer, i.e postal/billing address etc.

Once you have all that it is time for the card details, you can use worldpay, protx or any other, I prefer SecPay because they have a call XML API that lets you take payment from your site without going off to a protx, worldpay type website.

Hope this is enough to get you started, ignore the other comments. We all have to start somewhere, life is not free so why should for your time be free.

All the best

Understanding asp would be a must
Putting together a safe and secure shopping environment
Offering customers numerous ways of paying - credit card, paypal cheque etc
A secure server for online transactions

And loads of other things including a good legal write up explaining you won't be responsible if it all goes pear shaped Wink

You can probably take a look @ some opensource ecommerce scripts. Baically its all about adding the items selected to the cart, integrating with a third party credicard processing API like paypal, then moving it to the admin side for shipping and updating the status. Not very hard, but make sure that you take good care of the security.

Just use e-cart or zen-cart shopping cart. there is no need to programming.

You developed an e-commerce site without actually knowing how to make a shopping cart? Good luck to your client!
