What is the No_of_PM field used for in the Author table?

I assumed it as the number of private messages but in reality it differs from the number of actual PMs (received and sent) and the number of PMs displayed in the inbox is not from this field.

I thought it might be an unused field from previous versions however I have newish members with a non-zero value in the field...

...did I miss something obvious?

It holds the number of unread private messages the user has in their inbox.

It's done this way rather than running an SQL count query each time the user moves around the forum to increase performance and cut down on database hits, as the members username has to be read in from this table anyway.

This is then used to display how many New Messages the user has at the top of the forum and is also used so that if the value changes during their visit they an be notified of new private messages in their inbox.
