Hello,

I am somewhat familiar with .htaccess.  I used it several years ago and forgotten how to customize it for my purpose.

I did a little searching and found that .htaccess is associated with a Linux/Unix server.  The website I am now using is on a Windows server.  Can an .htaccess file works on a Windows server?

If anyone can point me to several good tutorials on the web, that will be great.

Cheers,

RCorr

.htaccess files can only be used on Windows servers when you have things like iisPassword installed on the server as an ISAPI filter.

You would need to con tact your web host and ask them if they have anything like this installed on the server.

Thanks WebWiz-Bruce.  .htaccess is now installed on our server.

Next, I am wondering if there is a solution to bypass the authentication pop up dialog box.  An ideal solution would to send the authentication via a form.  There will be PDF documents and Word files  that needs protecting and this is why server-side login scripting (check db, session variables) will not work in our case.

While doing a little research, I found that the user name and password can be apart of the URL - e.g. http://username:password@www.yourdomain.com/securedirectory/....

However, not all browsers support this.   I am wondering if there is another solution to bypass the authentication pop up dialog box.

Thanks in advance,

RCorr
