What are the recommended steps to migrate an Access install (9.53) to SQL Server. I have been using it for several years so I want to (hopefully) make the data migration smooth and easy.

I haven't had any issues with the Access version but our company is moving all our data off Access and to SQL Server 2005.

The best way is to use the upsize wizard in Access to create a new SQL Server database on the SQL Server.

You will need a trusted connection to the database server to do this so it needs to be running on the same PC or Intranet domain.

If you don't have this you can always install SQL Server Express on your own PC, upsize the database and then make a backup in SQL Server to move to your web hosts servers.

So I don't need to install a new version of WWF 9.53? I thought there was a separate version for SQL Server.

Before you do anything its always great practice to backup your existing access database first before trying anything Thumbs Up

Then you could try and follow http://www.online-tech-tips.com/ms-office-tips/ms-access-to-sql-database/ - these instructions I found and migrate to SQL that way - or better still ask your company to take care of the migration

I have it working and the data is in the database but when I open my forum there are no forums or posts! I don't get any errors.

Using SQL 2005. Any ideas why my forums and posts are not showing up?

Log into the admin area and resubmit the forum permissions. Also check that the order set for categories and forums is correct and each is ordered correctly.

It won't recognize my password. I checked and the data is there in the SQL table.

It sounds like you have not upsized your database correctly or that you have run a setup file on the database after the upsize.

Go back to your original Access database and try doing the upsize again.

Have done quite a few upsizes of Web Wiz Forums Access databasse to SQL Server for people when they move across to our hosting service. Most of the time it goes fairly smoothly, but have been known to have a few difficuylt ones that have taken up to 6 hours to sucessfulty upsize them.

I did the upsize from the Access database to SQL 2005 using the Access 2003 upsizing wizard. Are there any guidelines for doing this? All the tables appear to have data in them.

If you could provide a link to your forums it might help
Having read your posts I assume you did install SQL forum software?

OK, I downloaded and unzipped the SQL version of 9.53.
Updated database_connection.asp to match my SQL database settings
Uploaded to my webserver via FTP.
Same results.

Bruce can you help? It's running here: http://66.165.136.37/forum/default.asp - http://66.165.136.37/forum/default.asp

Sorry without digging into your server and installation I wouldn't know.

If you have paid for support then try contacting support through your Client Area account with your website, forum, and SQL Server login details for a technician to be able to have a look for you.

I was able to get it running. Here is what I did:

1. Deleted all the forum tables on my hosted SQL server
2. Upsized my database to my local SQL Express 2005 instance
3. Imported the tables into my main database on my hosting account. (i had to check the option to enable identity creation when importing data)

Note restoring the entire database wasn't an option for me since I have other tables that I don't want overwritten.

Anyway it is now running. Thanks for the assistance.
