Hi ,

I am using WWF Version 9.02 with MS SQL database.

I am trying to move my wwf to a new server and I have performed the following steps:

1.       I backed up the SQL.

2.       Created a new data base with the exact same name as the old one on the new server

3.       Restored the database and set up the permissions with the login and user as old

4.       Copied all wwf files from one sever to the other

After doing this I tried to launch the homepage and I received the following error:

=========================================================================

Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occurred while connecting to the database.
Please contact the forum administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_SQLServer_db_connection
File Name:- common.asp

Error details:-

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Invalid connection string attribute

I have double and triple checked the syntax and entries within the database_connection.asp file and all is the same.

Can anyone advise as to what I might have missed?  I checked through these forums, but there are only a few topics with the same error.

Thank you,

Wolf

This error suggests that the database_connection.asp file does not have the correct attribute necessary to connect to your new server / database.

Are you using MSSQL Express? ANy difference of SQL servers between the old and new one?

Sometimes the SQL instance name matters... is this your own dedicated server? Try using 'localhost' as the server name...if you have already done that, try the IP address of the server.

i have the same setup as yours (or used to).. the only difference is that i have server 05 instead of 2000 now.

try re-uplloading a fresh copy of database_connection.asp file and put the new connection info on there and see what happens...

I would suggest that you use SQL Server 2005 or 2008 as you will get much better performance due to server side paging with Web Wiz Forums.

The free SQL Server 2008 Express Edition is fine for running web applications and will save you allot of money of licensing fees compared with SQL Server 2000.

HI Bruce,

Thanks - I can definetly do that.  Can I use the current database, or do I have to upgrade?

Wolf,
You should still be able to use the same Database..  But it would be best to upgrade though as newer things have been introduced and more securities have been implemented

MySQL is a better Database.. it is alot more smoother and runs alot better than SQL.. As for the Conversion I have a link below that might help you out with some information on how to do it... plus the best thing about it is that converter is free...

Always remember to make a back up of your database before doing anything drastic to your Datebase.. just be cautious before attempting

With Web Wiz Forums then you should use SQL Server 2005 or 2008.

mySQL is a good and can be faster than SQL Server, however do see database corruption issues with larger databases that are around 500MB or more in size. You also see backward compatibility issues with the myODBC driver which does tend to break things.

For this reason I would say go with SQL Server 2005 or 2008 which is more stable, can handle well over a million posts, and is fast.

You will also be able to attach your SQL Server 2000 database to SQL Server 2008 (all versions), or use a backup of your SQL Server 2000 database to restore it to SQL Server 2008.
