I belong to a forum at Web Wiz that has a real problem with someone taking over others names (with small modifications obviously), and creating a terrible problem. This particular forum is for people with a chronic illness and for support, it has been  acknowledged as the best on the www. The owner/moderator is always absent and does not reply to emails and posts made to him. We begin to suspect HE is the culprit!! The person causing trouble is an ex member...no doubt about that, but who? And in the meantime, 100's of people coming to the forum for support get to see some real sick stuff. We are sick enough without this addition. Ouch

Is there any way we can find the IP address of the person  causing so much grief? I would suggest that having IP's logged whether anyone likes it or not to be a real solution.
There is no getting away from the fact that there are weirdo's/bullies out there that delight in creating mayhem and pain and I hope you can enforce IP's to be logged on all posts.

PLEASE!!!! I am also sure this is not the first time you have been asked to do this.

TIA

Annella

ETA: Oooops! I see this forum is for hosters...Im not one of those yet but please can you help??

There are many things that can be done to prevent this type of abuse, but unfortunly they need to be setup by the forum admin and not by users.

The IP address of the person who posted the message is displayed to forums admins and moderator above each post with an option to block that IP address or IP range from the forums.

There are also other measures that can be put in place by the forums admin such as email activation of new members, admin pre approval of new members, post moderation where posts are not duisplayed until a forum admin or moderator first approves the post.

There are lost of things that can be done, but unfortunly these features can only be enabled by the admin or only available to the admin. Otheriwse rouge members could go blocking the IP's of others, suspend the accounts of others, hide posts, etc.

Thank you Bruce, for your prompt reply. However, I need to add that I belong to many forums/boards where IP addys are there for everyone to see. It seems to me that an easy way to keep peace at Im sure, many of the forums you host; would be to enable IPs to be seen. Is that difficult to do?
Please consider this, I implore you on behalf of people all over this World who will desert the forum we are at unless something is done. Its that bad. Confused

This is something that would need to be done by the forum admin. Most Web Wiz Forums are not hosted by us. Out of the 1,000's of downloads each week less than 2% would be hosted on our systems, most would be installed on the person own hosting space from another provider or their own servers.

The majority of people do not like their IP addresses being made public, if it was enabled by default for all to see there would be an outcry from users regarding their privacy. Allot of forum admins don't even like their moderators seeing IP addresses and we quite often get people asking to make IP's hidden from all, your post must be the first in over 8 years asking for IP's to be made public.

It is the responsibility of the forum admin to ensure that the board runs smoothly and it is those people who are given the power to view, block, etc. IP addresses.

If your forum admin is not around much then the best thing to do is ask them if they could make you a moderator so you are able to view and block IP addresses.

By the way if the forum you are using (as you did not give a URL to it), has our Web Wiz Forums branding on it then it is not a forum hosted on our network.

People who host their websites/forums with us get the brand-free edition of Web Wiz Forums installed on their hosting accounts for free. The brand-free edition does not have any Web Wiz branding.

If the forum you are using has the Web Wiz branding on it then it is not one hosted by ourselves.
