I just upgraded my forum to the latest paid version of webwiz.  Prior to upgrading, sending email from my forum worked fine.  Since the upgrade, I get error 0x80040217.  Nothing has changed on my mail server.  Even the settings within my forum are the same as they were prior to the upgrade.
 
I have tried changing the server to localhost, the ip address, and the FQDN.  All to no avail. I can send and reseive email from outlook and OWA.
 
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Could you please post the complete error message rather than just the number? (eg description / file / line etc)

As it will help identify the issue faster.


Also, Since you upgraded, it could be currupt files during FTP transfer, try re-uploading the files to see if it corrects the issue.

Sorry for the late response, I've been out of contact for awhile.  I've had a friend minding the store and he didn't know what to do about the error.
 
Here's the entire error message.
 
Test Email Settings

The email has NOT been sucessfully sent!!

Please check your Email Settings are correct.

Server Error Message:-

The message could not be sent to the SMTP server. The transport error code was 0x80040217. The server response was not available

Your email settings in the admin area are incorrect and the mail server is rejecting the email.

The problem with CDOSYS is that the error messages are not very descriptive, so not really sure what 0x80040217 means. However, I would have a look at things like if you need authentication with the mail server and if you have the correct username and password.

Thanks Bruce.  I've tried several different usernames and passwords.  Nothing seems to work.  I have no problems sending or receiving email from this server, only through webwiz.  I had to turn off email verification because of this and now I have A LOT of questionable registrations.

I've looked up the CDOSYS error  0x80040217 on Google and it would seem that the normal reason for this error from CDOSYS is if the username and password for the mail server are incorrect.

You can also see this error if the your acoc**t on the mail server is disabled or throttled for sending to many emails.

Check in the admin area of web wiz forums that you have the correct usrename and password for the mail server.

If you still have problems you should also try re-uploading the original web wiz forums files again, as often unexpected errors are due to corrupted files.
