Hi,

I may be purchasing a SSL certificate (im a web wiz hosting customer) and I would like to know how to implement it on the forum software. The areas I particularly want to enable SSL over are the registration and member profiles.

How straight-foward is this to do? I would be looking for a certificate with "secure" in the hostname (https://secure.mydomain.com) - does this pose a further problem?

Thanks

You can not have particular pages set to SSL. If you want to use SSL then you would need to have your whole forum running in SSL.

Web Wiz Hosting Packages now come with Shared SSL as standard, if you wanted to purchase an SSL certificate for one of your own hostnames then these are available at an extra cost. Contact Sales and Accounts for further information.

Is this a feature which could be considered in a future version of WWF? Perhaps only to WW hosting customers?

Are you referring to offering SSL or to having the forum only display SSL for the registration and profile pages?

Being able to have SSL for pages such as the registration pages is on the 'todo' list for version 10.

However, there are issues with this type of setup as the web browser will see the SSL URL as a new domain and therefore would not share cookies, which would mean having to login again when you switch between SSL and non SSL.

As the login tracking is done through querystrings and cookies having just certain pages in SSL would give little or no protection so would be a bit of a waste of time. You would be better of having the whole forum running under SSL if you are that worried about security.

SSL is good for websites that use credit card details but to be honest is a complete overkill for a forum as no hacker is going to waste the amount of time needed with packet sniffing just to get login details to a forum account.

There are also performance hits when using SSL which would slow down your website.

Another thing you should consider is when you signup to a forum you are placing your information into a public space for anyone to view.

Anyone who is a member is able to view your forum profile so having profiles in SSL would be a waste of time as all someone needs to do to view your profile is register on the forum.
