I'm aware that for this option ISAPI_Rewrite 3 should be installed. Unfortunately my hosting company doesn't have it  installed since they do provide http://www.iis.net/extensions/URLRewrite" rel="nofollow - http://www.iis.net/extensions/URLRewrite

Can this module be used for webwiz forums as well ?

Thank you !

We have yet to test the IIS 7 Rewrite Mod. However from documentation I remember reading on it you can import rules that are in the Apache Rewrite Mod format, which the Web Wiz Forums URL Rewrite .htaccess file uses.

Your only issue will be how to import the rules as it is something that needs to be done in the IIS Management Tool. Unless your host provides some other tools to do this.

We will be looking ourselves at IIS 7 Rewrite Mod compatibility in the next few weeks, as of yet have not yet used it only brefily looked at some of the documentation on it, so can not say for sure at this point if a version of our Web Wiz Forums Rewrite Tool can be made avilable for IIS 7 Rewrite Mod.

Have tried doing an import of the existing rules into IIS 7 Rewrite Mod and it does work to a certain extent.

The security aspects have to be removed, and some alterations need to be made to the other parts.

Allot more testing and tweaking is needed, but will hopefully have the rules in a downloaded web.config file for IIS 7 Rewrite Mod probably over the next week.

Thank you !
my host admins have told me they will enable this option in the next 7 days (yep, they are quite slow on such things) and once they do that i will try it and post some feedbacks.

So far I can tell you that the IIS 7 Rewrite Mod is no where near as good as ISAPI_Rewrite and is very difficult to work with.

Even on Microsoft's own IIS 7 rewrite Mod documentation pages they recommend that you use ISAPI_Rewrite if you want more advanced functionality.

Although I think we can get IIS 7 Rewrite Mod support in Web Wiz Forums it is not going to be as good as ISAPI_Rewrite

This is my first post and I think web wiz forums software is really incredible.

Anyway I've just purchased a license and an important reason why I bought it was because of the SEO benefits fo url re-writing, so well done for adding this feature.

After setting up I went to add the url re-write feature only to find that I need to get some software installed on the server I use- the url re-write software cost another $99.

Am I incorrect about this?

There is a 'lite' version of the ISAPI Re-write but it looks like the Web Wiz functionality won't work with it. Would the 'lite' version work?

If not then I'm keen to see the IIS 7 - MS version working sufficiently.

Look forward to response/development of free solution.

I really like Web Wiz Forums! Thank You!

If you have purchased the licence then when it is all completed (which I expect you have just done this recently) you will be able to download the Re-Write software from your licencing area

MrTWS you didn't understand me correctly.

I have downloaded the 'software', but for it to work I need a special piece of software installed on the server that the rest of my website runs on. That software is called Helicon ISAPI Re-write and it costs $99.

Maybe re-read my post?

Support for the IIS 7 Rewrite Module is almost complete with full functionality except for the extra security features to block access to certain directories which is not supported with IIS 7 rewrite Module, but this does not affect the rewrite features.

Hopefully it should be ready for release later this week, but want to do allot more testing first to make sure there are no issues.

One advantage is that the IIS 7 Rewrite Module is that it is free, but it only works with IIS 7. ISAPI_Rewrite 3 Full does is not free but will run with IIS 5, 6, and 7, and does work significantly faster than the IIS 7 Rewrite Module.

Brilliant Work. Thanks Bruce.

Your really a superstar. Web Wiz Forums is wonderfully refined with so many great features. I really appreciate your work.

You mentioned that the free MS IIS 7 re-write could perform worse that the Helicon ISAPI re-write, do you think that once you've completed all your tests you could give a little detail on how much of a performance hit and what areas would suffer in particular please?

The performance difference isn't enough to register, but when developing on our local network here there is a slight lag when using IIS 7 rewrite Module. When you remove the URL Rewrite Module or use ISAPI_Rewrite then it feels faster and reponsive.

The Web Wiz Forums URL Rewrite download has been updated to also include a web.config file for The Microsoft URL Rewrite Module for IIS 7.

If you have The Microsoft URL Rewrite Module for IIS 7 installed on the server just place the web.config file in the root folder of Web Wiz Forums 9.56 or above for the URL Rewriting to work.

Is it possible to use the Lite version of ISAPI_Rewrite?

It says .htaccess files aren't allowed, but if the contents were copied into ISAPI_Rewrite's config would it work?

Yes it will work with the Lite version but is more difficult to setup.

You would need to copy the contents for the .htaccess file to the httpd.config file found in ISAPI_rewrites install directory.

Under the 'RewriteEngine on' line you need to place the follwoing:-

RewriteBase /

If Web Wiz Forums is not installed in a root of a website then you will need to include the folder name eg:-

RewriteBase /forum/

However, you should be aware that as this is global to the whole server it may effect other sites and pages on the server.

Well, i knew i should be quiet :(
I just been notified that our RSS links do not work properly with the url rewrite module enabled.
It seems that single RSS feeds (for a particular forum) now do include ALL messages from all forums.
It was something i screwed up? Is there any option i should check to avoid this issue?
Thank you !

It looks like there maybe an issue with it not reading the forum ID, will have to look into it.

I removed the RSS part of the url rewrite rules (web.config) as a temporary solution.
Thank you.

Just a question to you who have been working with SEO

1. Does URL Rewrite have a big effect ?
2. What about people who have linked to the different topics before URL Rewrite was installed, will their links still work ?

This was fixed back about 2 months ago with URL Rewrite 1.4

Try downloading the latest release of the URL Rewrite Tool.
