If Bruce deems this a BAD place to post this, he or a mod can feel free to move it.
I'm SWAMPED with projects and so stressed that I'm on relaxers and pain killers - but have a project that needs doing.
I know that Bruce will upgrade forum software since we have him as a host (and love his services!) but the problem is, I've put in some modifications and was REALLY STUPID and did not document what I changed! I didn't document the files I changed, mods I added, etc. I've changed the CSS file for the look/feel, and added a paypal button and another link to bookmark the forum page.
I know there's a couple of really fine folks who hang here who have written the mods I've used and who are really smart and GOOD with ASP code and this forum.
I'd like to toss this out and see if it sticks or floats, etc.
We are http://theamcforum.com/forum   http://theamcforum.com
We are running an early 9x version and need to get to the VERY latest 9.5xa or whatever.
Is it possible to hire someone to check the CURRENT files, see if the mods can be moved to the NEW files, make the changes and help with the upgrade?
Does anyone here offer such a service, and if so, what would be the cost?
PM ME with this info please! Let's not conduct business in public.... but Scotty32 and a couple others seem to be brilliant with the mods. The who visited is his mod, as well as probably one or two others. I've added smilies, changed colors, changed the status text colour (green=online, etc.)
Basically, I need someone to look at the current forum, see what mods are there, put those mods in the new forum files, DOCUMENT it, and pass the new forum files with the mods back to me so an upgrade can be done. But first, need to know the cost - to see if we can even AFFORD it.
I've got SO much going on and the stuff I'm on for pain makes me more scatter-brained than usual and just don't have time to do it right. And this time, it's going to get DOCUMENTED so I know what's where, and WHAT files have changed!!
I love this forum software, the host is a really fine fellow, the services are solid and reliable and the folks here who work so hard on modifications and then let us use them for FREE, wow......

I think you will find that it would be easier to let Bruce run the upgrade for you from 9.08 to 9.56a, and then worry about adding the modifications back in - I don't mind assisting you with the changes to bring it back in line with your current look and feel, as I've been using the software and modifications since version 9.06

Looking very quickly at your current forum, and comparing it with some of our own, and others that we have adapted too, I'm fairly confident that we could re-implement the changes into the new files without too much interruption to your current users

If you are interested then PM me and we can discuss this privately

You mention you are using some of mine...

It would be best to simply download the latest version and install that rather than copy over the existing you have for my mods, as there will of been changes made for specific WWF versions.

Though if you are installing any such as the Multiskin Selection which creates extra fields in the database, then you only need to do this once. (eg if you used V1 or 2, then you do not need to run the database file for V3).

Scotty - I think that the who visited today and the online status colors were your mods - if I recall.
Bruce blasted the new upgrade yesterday - and actually kept the colors and such, I did have to go back and redo the rte text box color as it was back to dark blue - seems I didn't do that in the CSS file, but did it directly in the rte_textarea.asp file originally, so I put it back that way...
Probably would have been best in the CSS, I have no idea why I did it this way, but I did and it works great............ note the background:#ffffff  bit..........

<style>
html,body{border:0px;margin:1px;background:#ffffff;}
td {border:1px dotted #CCCCCC;}
</style>

I'll get back to your site and get the latest. I also need to get the banner rotation code back in, Bruce said it was crashing the forum after the update so the code in the 9.08 version must not work with the 9.56a version - I don't have the banners ready yet, but still would like to have the code there.

TWS - looks like it wasn't as tough as originally thought, it still needs a few tweaks, but went fine.

May I suggest the following:

First, download all of your existing forum code to a directory your hard drive
Next, in another directory, place the UNMODIFIED code for the forum version you are using

You can then do a File Compare of the two directories. If you use a product like UltraEdit's UltraCompare, it will save the differences - basically, it will document for you the modifications you made to your forum code!

You can then upgrade your forum code (with your download as a backup) and use what you saved from UltraCompare as documentation to make your mods.

Let me know if this helps.

I my just do that. Good ol' Bruce here got us updated, etc. etc so we are running 9.56  (and loving it)
but i need to get a couple mods back. Some stuff came through, but he had to remove some code as it kept crashing thngs, so he removed the code. Better than than crashes!
Bruce did a great job.
I would like to put back (probably SIMPLE) the colored online status,
the "who visited today"
and the code for different banners for each section or forum, even though the latter we aren't using yet as I don't have the new banners ready............
I can't recall who's code was what, but have them all intact at home with credits, so could find out.
I'd also like to put into place a spot for a "rotating ad" in the upper right corner. We've had a couple of folks ask about advertising on our forum, and want a SMALL, unintrusive ad spot in the upper right. I did up a sample on my home sandbox system and it looked great, but it was static - same ad all the time............

all three that you mention are related to me.

You should be able to just apply the http://www.s2h.co.uk/wwf/mods/who-visited-today/" rel="nofollow - Who Visited Today mod following the instructions in the read me file.

As for the other two you just need to follow the http://www.s2h.co.uk/wwf/tips/look/colourised-online-status.asp" rel="nofollow - Colourised Online Status and http://www.s2h.co.uk/wwf/tips/look/change-banner-for-forums.asp" rel="nofollow - Change Banner for Forums tutorials.
In the case of the http://www.s2h.co.uk/wwf/tips/look/change-banner-for-forums.asp" rel="nofollow - Change Banner for Forums tutorial, if you backed up your forum you can grab the Function code from there to re-apply your old banners.

For future compatibility and ease of upgrade, I would recommend creating your own files and hosting them outside of the forum.
For example, create a new skin (copy an existing?) and put the files in a folder outside of the forum, for example: "site.com/skin/".

And for the banner changing, create a file called "functions.asp" and place it in say "site.com/includes/". Then add the following code to the very end of the "/forum/common.asp" file to include it:

<!--#include virtual="/includes/function.asp"-->

This way, when you upgrade, you only need to add this include to your site rather than reapplying everything. Could even include the first line of code from my tutorial in this file to.

As for the rotating advert, there are lots of tutorials on how to randomise, you could create a function and place it in the function.asp file I mentioned above. There are various tutorials on the internet that would help with this.
