Just to clarify. I have a client who has an existing website and wants to add a forum.

Is the community hosting service such that when people click to go to the forum, it is hosted from your website? Only the forum lives on your website and we can keep our current website hosted by another party.

And say for example (just an example) our website is www.starbucks.com. Would the domain for the forum be starbucks.webwiznewpad.com? or could it be forum.starbucks.com and just point to your server?

You can use something similar to both formats you mention.

You could use forum.starbucks.com and then setup a DNS zone for this sub domain on your present providers DNS servers, register a new domain, or choose a free generic domain in the format of one of the domains below:-

myforum.ActiveBoards.net
myforum.BulletinSystem.com
myforum.LiveSiteOnline.com
myforum.OurLiveChat.com
myforum.WebBulletin.info
myforum.WebSiteLive.net
