We've for a long time wanted to make it a REQUIREMENT that new members include a location and name.
Granted, they can lie, but when people want to sell or buy, it's nice to have a location displayed instead of wondering, gee, are they selling this car from Australia? Or the states....
Also, name are nice as they lend a bit of stability - and force folks to think a bit. Again, they can lie, but it will force a few honest folks to be more honest.
HOWEVER, one very smart member hit me with this - he doesn't want people to join just so they can view profiles and harvest information..... so he wants some sort of safeguards in place.
I had thought of this - how about if the location and name fields were mandatory, but allow the users/members to be able to say - yes, show my profile to those who wish to see it, but ONLY if they are a member of xxx group, OR have over 50 posts on the forums, for example.
That way there won't be folks joining but never posting, or posting 1 or 2, then harvesting information, etc.

Ideas??

Requiring information is relatively simple maybe 3 lines of code for each new requirement.

Limiting the member access to those that have significant post count will be a little trickier, but still rather trivial.

I get the feeling you want to feel the honesty from your members :)

This was really a serious question, and in big part brought up by members of our forum.
They want to know where folks are located, esp in the buy/sell area, and they prefer dealing with real names rather than ghosts.
So I came to ask a genuine question posed by some of our 2500 members....... I always pass along their requests and questions.
As admin, it's REALLY helpful in keeping the peace at times if you have names and locations - folks are less likely to say stupid things if we know who they are.

Version 10 has had this already developed for it, that the admin can decide if the real name and location fields are mandatory or not.

The part 2 would be about making it so that only certain groups can look at a member profile.........
Pick and choose, either the admin makes the choice, or the end user - who can see their profile. Right now, and member can view a profile. some would like to see that restricted because of the explosive growth of the number of spammers joining all forums around the world. Even support forums, such as Symantec's forums, are seeing this trend. So users would like to see restrictions. Spammers won't get up to 10 posts on our forums, we watch too closely........

LOL - there are times I think we should be running version 10!

If you know a little coding, you could modify the profile page with a simple if then statement.  If the current user has > 50 posts then display the location, else display nothing.  It is amazing what you can do with an if then statement.

The down side of modifying it yourself is that every time you upgrade the forums you have to add your changes back though.  But the change is minor.

What we want is for those with under xx posts to NOT be able to see a member profile, just like a GUEST can't view a profile now - make it so even MEMBERS can't see a profile of any other member unless that have over xx posts. Not to not display info but to not allow "newbies" access to the member profile areas.
As it stands, guests or non-members can't view anyone's profile, but join the forum and even with NO posts, you can view a profile. We want that stopped............

if you want to stop anyone in the "newbie" group, then you can edit the page to stop that group.

there should already be code to stop guests from viewing the page, something like this:

if intGroupID = 2 then
   response.redirect(...)
end if

or

if lngLoggedInUserID = 2 then
   response.redirect(...)
end if

All you would do is alter the code like so:

if intGroupID = 2 or intGroupID = 4 then
   response.redirect(...)
end if

Im not sure the ID number for the Newbie group, but I'll post the exact code tonight when I'll have access to the WWF code.

Wow, why didn't I think of that? I guess that's a reminder of why I don't code!
Yes, since guests or non-members already can't view the user profiles and other items, just add an "or"
to the thing.
Thanks - that does look simple! (well, basically simple - might have to hit multiple spots, perhaps?)
