Is there any way for me as an administrator to search for posts or members by IP address? I suspect that a user is using a second account to stir things up, and want to find which (if any) other user names are posting from their IP address.

Only by querying your DB at source (or remotely). There's nothing in the actual forum software that will do this for you.

This is on the 'todo' list to add to the search page for admins and moderators.

This has now been added to the next release 9.64.

On the search form admins and moderators will find a new option in the Keyword Search drop down to search for an IP address.

The admin or moderator would simply enter the IP address, or part of the IP address as the keyword and select IP Address from the drop down. The search will then return all posts under that IP address for the criteria given.

This sounds like an excellent addition Bruce Clap

WOW! VERY nice! Thanks!
We had an issue where a member was using an alter-ego - signed up as two people. As one he played really dumb and a bit goofy, as the other, he played a slightly different role, and we found in real life, he's a conniving lawyer and liked to cause trouble in our hobby........ but we had to look up a lot of messages and start comparing addresses. This would have taken us only seconds with this option. Thanks.

We had to developed a very simple asp list some years back because members sometimes came back under a different name etc...

We wanted one box into which we entered a part IP or part nickname and it reports all matching IPs with nicknames used in posts (getting the nickname) from the author record.

Ours does not link to the post but I am wondering if a small enhancement of your new facility to do part IPs and/or part nicknames would be useful...

I think this was the code

Recordset1.Source = "SELECT dbo.tblAuthor.Username, dbo.tblThread.IP_addr FROM dbo.tblAuthor INNER JOIN dbo.tblThread ON dbo.tblAuthor.Author_ID=dbo.tblThread.Author_ID GROUP BY dbo.tblAuthor.Username, dbo.tblThread.IP_addr HAVING (dbo.tblThread.IP_addr) Is Not Null and ((dbo.tblAuthor.Username) Like '%" + Replace(Recordset1__nick, "'", "''") + "%' or (dbo.tblThread.IP_addr) Like '%" + Replace(Recordset1__nick, "'", "''") + "%') ORDER BY dbo.tblAuthor.Username;"

The new IP Address search can do both part IP Address and there is still the option to search on part username.

You are also able to combine the two so you can search on part IP and part Username.

You also still have other options avaiable such as show results as Topics, Posts, select date range, select forum, etc.

Installed and loving it! The only thing better would be an admin-only button next to the IP address of a poster to search that IP. Maybe someone handy in ASP code could whip it together (hint hint Wink)

On a related note, here's a great site for investigating IP addresses. Country of origin and subnet. It helps me block entire subnets from ISPs with spammers:

http://centralops.net/co/DomainDossier.aspx" rel="nofollow - http://centralops.net/co/DomainDossier.aspx

Plug-in the IP address and check "network whois".

Just a little warning: I haven't checked 9.64, but in 9.63 and earlier the IP address of a post is changed when the post is edited. That means that if a moderator is editing a post made by User1 and a post made by User2, both posts will show the IP address of the moderator. Therefore it will falsely look like User1 and User2 is using the same IP address.

Is this feature available in this new version 9.64? I can't find it... :-(

Yes it is in 9.64.

You need to be logged into the forum as an admin or moderator and when you go to the advanced search page you type in the IP or part of the IP as the keyword and in the drop down box next to it select to search for an IP address.
