Does anyone know if you can transfer a SQL database from one host to another without damaging the database?

Yep.  Depends on how much control you have over your host though.

If you have access to DTS then this is probably the easiest method.

If you Right-Click on your database in Enterprise Manager and select Export Data, you will see the DTS wizard where you can copy data between databases.

If you don't have this power, then you might need to do it through script. If you search google there may be some ASP scripts to do this.

Cheers,
Andrew

Bunce is right about control... but the best way is to get into the enterprise manager, "detach" the database, transfer the MDF and the LDF files to the new host, then "attach" the new database. You may need to make a few phone calls for that. You may also need to redo permissions in a few places. I don't know what your DB looks like, but that should be enough to get you on the right track. i.e. Detach it from the one place, and then Attach it in the new place.

[ oops - edited for silly typo - host/hose ]
