Subject: Image Uploading Browse Button Missing?
Date Posted: 15 January 2010 at 12:08am
I have a few users who are complaining that the Browse Button in the Image Uploading window is missing.  It's not happening for everyone, and it seems to be an intermittent problem for those to whom it is happening.  One user had the problem, but then it mysteriously went away.

Any thoughts?

The upload button will only display if the members has permission to upload.

Older versions use to use a session variable to pass around the upload permission to pop up windows, however this was changed. If you are not running the latest version then it could be a session issue on the server, which upgrading your forum should fix.

I'm on 9.64, which I realize isn't the most current as of very recently, but one of the users that has complained is a long-standing member of the forum.  He's had permission to upload for years.  I'm suspecting that it's either a Microsoft update issue or a client-side antivirus issue.

Ask this member which browser they are using and if you can some post some details it may help to resolve the issue
Perhaps they have a popup blocker not quite set correctly

I have a user who has experienced the issue with both Chrome and IE8.  The image upload window looks like this:

Ha!  Ironically, I just experienced the exact same issue on these support forums when I tried to post that image!  My image upload window also does not have a browse button.  I'm using 32-bit IE8 on a 64-bit laptop.

Any thoughts?

Additional information:

The laptop mentioned above is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I have also tested from my home system.  The Browse button is showing up when I open the Image Upload window from my site on my home office system, but it is not showing up when I try to post to this support forum from the same system.  I have the 2 windows open side by side.  My forum has the browse button, but this support forum does not!  (The home office machine is a Windows Server 2008 Web Edition with IE8.)

You need to have a look at the upload settings page in the admin area of your forum and check to see if the users group has image uploading enabled.

You will not see an upload button on this support forum as we do not have image uploading enabled.

If you notice the bit at the top of the image window it says uploads/public

which means as Bruce says you have not allowed uploads from guest users I'm assuming

You're exactly right, guys.

I had added some groups a while back but didn't think about going back into the image uploading configuration and allowing these groups to upload images.  I had only configured their Group Security.  I've taken care of it now.

Thanks for the help!
