I've been running webwiz forum 7.1 (Access version) for a few years and it works fine. Can I upgrade to the current 9.2 version without losing anything? If so, are there any special concerns?

The install/upgrade wizard in the latest version will upgrade your 7.x database to 9.x retaining all your forums, topics, posts, etc. The only thing you would need to do is go through the new permission system and reset any permissions you have.
