I want to install the new version 9.65 of Web Wiz Forums on my site. I am currently using an old version of the same software. I have no idea what version number it is because of its age, I started using it in 2002 and no version number is shown on it.

I have used the user import tool which is nice, but there are three fields that don't get imported that I would like to have: Homepage, Join_date, and Avatar. Can this be done somehow?

Also, is there any way to import my other forum data - categories, topics, etc.? My old version used an Access97 database and I am still going to be using Access with the new version.

If it is from 2002 it is probably a version 6.x.

The version 6 to version 7 Access migration tool can be downloaded from the link below:-

Once you have a version 7.x database you can use the install/upgrade wizard when installing the latest version to upgrade your new 7.x Access database to version 9.x

Ok, I have another question. The newer versions of WWF seem to use encrypted passwords. My old version used plain text passwords. Is there any way that I as admin can see what the passwords are unencrypted? I use the passwords users select when they sign up for other parts of my site so I need to know what they are to add them.

I have successfully done the migration from my old database to version 7. However, I'm having problems doing the upgrade from 7 to 9. When I go to the new forum for the first time, I select upgrade from 7.x, Access database, and input the path and name to the new v9 database. The connection test is fine, but then it says my database has already been updated. If I replace the v9 database with my v7 database, I can't get to the forum at all, I get an error because the v7 database doesn't have a session table.

I'm assuming I need the v9 database in place, but then how does it know where to find the v7 database to upgrade it?

The version 7 to version 9 upgrade tool is an upgrade tool rather than a migration tool, so what it will do is modify your existing version 7 database creating the extra fields and tables within that database, rather than migrating the data to a new database.

So what you should do is delete the version 9 database that comes with 9.x and replace it with your version 7 database and let the upgrade wizard upgrade the database.

Yes, I got it to work! ;) The problem was I modified something I shouldn't have. Ooops. ;) I still would liek to know about the unencrypted passwords in my earlier post. Is tehre somewhere as admin I can look at the actual passwords? Or can I turn off encryption?

Passwords are 160bit one way encrypted. It would be no good encrypting passwords if they could be un-encrypted as hackers would simply un-encrypt the passwords to gain access.

You can however turn off password encryption in the includes/setup_options_inc.asp file by editing it in notepad. However, anyone already in the database would be unable to login and would need to use the forgotten password tool to generate a new password for themselves.

If you have got your own membership system then have a look instead at using the existing member API to integrate your own membership system with Web Wiz Forums. For more info see the page below:-

Thanks for all your help. I've figured out how to do what I need to do with the forum and have been making a custom skin and other various things. I did buy a registration key, but I'm waiting until I put up the live version to apply it. I've been playing around with a test copy of the free version for now. I plan to do the actual switchover next week.

I appear to be having a similar issue.  I've used the forum since 2002, but have been out of the scene for about 5 years!  (Forgot my web wiz forum login even...)

I'm upgrading from 7.x to 9.65 (latest?).  However, what occurs is that after testing the connection and then clicking Next >> I am redirected back to the beginning of the updgrade where I have to select which version.  It's in some kind of loop.

I aplogize if this is a known issue...I wasn't able to find any posts addressing it.

Thanks for your help.

I've achieved some success...  A couple things to point out:

After 5 attempts to use the upgrade wizard in IE8, I decided to try Google chrome.  Interestingly enough, I got a different result (a yellow box appeared with a warning about permissions.)  More interesting, I then went back to IE and it too gave me the warning.

One thing I screwed up was that I had moved the database directory - as recommended - to another location.  However, the default database directory must stay even if moving the database itself to another location.

I also may have had some permission issues.  I use Plesk v9 and it uses IWPD_XXX in addition to IUSR_XXX.  From what I've read, it's the IWPD account that is being used and not IUSR and I've confirmed this with other apps.  For some reason, WWF seems to run under IUSR...

I admit there is probably some user error involved, but I thought I'd point out what I experienced.
