When users click (or Right Click) in a text area I need to get the index of the position, the formatting of the position and select the surrounding text with the same formatting.

This would be extremely difficult to achieve.

I do recall experimenting with setting this type of thing up a few years back but after spending around 20 plus hours on it gave up in the end as it proved to difficult to get working in a number of browsers.

It will be sufficient for the application if it can be done in IE only.

Given that IE is real buggy it's IE that is the one that is a pig to code for and takes the most time.
