I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, sorry If I am on the wrong place...

I was looking for the best way to insert the google analytics code on the forum and my conclusion was that the footer.asp is the best place. But while looking at it, I found a tip to use a code to insert the username on the stats as a custom variable, find it a great tip.

This is the code:

<script type="text/javascript">pageTracker._setVar("<%=strLoggedInUsername%>");</script>

Now I am trying to do more with my GA accont and see what else can be done.

Who is doing something like that? Is there a way to use GA as a log system, seeing where the users are going and what they are doing?

Thanks

Yes Google recommends analytics code be placed at the bottom of all pages you want monitored. I'd be interested in knowing how readable your analytics reports are with the custom variable you're inserting (especially if you have a lot of active users). Are you trying to determine most active users through that variable? Many forums sites use GA to create a "funnel" (goal) for something like "registered users"...

My forum is a small one, we are only 92 members but something arround 60 are active and we have 90 visits per day and 1000 page exibits per day.

With this custom variable I can generate personalized reports and from them I can see the number of visits of a user, in a month, day or week, I can know the pages the user is seeing, and I can have the last visit and how long from the last visit from him to a determinated page. So far these were my tests, I know I can do a lot more and I believe that with time and tips from other users I can do more usefull stuff with GA.

I'm guessing as a forum owner you're interested in getting more registrations (of new subscribers). Look at the goals/funnels of Google Analtyics as it's easy to set up that type of goal (and also helps determine where visitors are getting stuck or are backing out of completing some process).
