Subject: Question about the new session check v9.67

I'm in the stage of testing the latest version of the forum app and so far it seems that our members that have access to the testing forum app have issues with the new session time-out checking.
While our members have experienced lost messages in the past due to server sessions time outs it wasn't a serious problem since it happened rarely.

However, the new check-in is suggesting sessions time-outs quite regularly  (way more often that we experienced the issue before) which may in the end bring more frustrating experiences than posts lost in the past.

Is there any way to easily disable this option if it turns out that we would be better without it?

Also, i believe a better description (java-script warning)  should be provided and IMHO a suggestion to copy the contents of the message before pressing refresh button would be useful (at least for our forum members which are actually confused about what to do when the message appears) . Of course, i can edit the files myself but it may be useful to consider such improvement in the original code as well.

Thank you !

Version 9.67 will not cause more session timeouts although the new message will heighten peoples awareness when it does happen and so you are probably seeing more people report the issue.

If you are getting lots of session timeouts then it suggests an issue with either your forum installation or an issue with the server, which would need to be investigated.

You also mention that you are testing the new version. If you have two copies of the forum installed on the same website, one old and one new in different folders then the issue could well be cookie related as you will be doubling up on cookies from different locations causing issues. You should edit the file includes/setup_options_inc.asp on your test installation and give it different cookie and application variable prefixes.

Thank you for the answer.

In our test application we already had different prefixes for both cookies and app variables but this didn't helped much.

We tried new forum app as the public one but after a day of use and too much of our members having issues with the session timeouts we reverted back to the older forum version (reupload didn't helped either) :(

Can i assume that there isn't an easy way to disable this new session check?

Thank you !

It could easily be removed, however this would not help as it would simply go back to the old system whereby when the user posts they get a page saying that there post was not saved as their session had dropped and to check cookies on their browser.

The new system simply alerts them before the page is submitted allowing them to save the post.

I would say that you need to investigate further to findout why the sessions are dropping as there must be some setting on the server or a modification to your forum that is causing this.

We are running version 9.67 on many big forums hosted on our own systems for companies including Microsoft. These forum get posted in hundreds of times a day and not heard any reports of people with sessions being dropped in this way.

The only people who are reporting issues are a small minority of forums all of which are not hosted with us, and without more details on server and forum setup it will be hard to workout why this small minority of forums are getting this issue.

I've just been looking around your forum for 10 minutes and in that time the active users page was cleared out twice.

This means that there is a problem with the application pool for your website and it keeps recycling. Every time this happens all sessions will be dropped, and this is why you are probably getting the errors you are. You would need to contact your webhost and get them to look into this issue.

To limit this error you should also edit the includes/setup_options_inc.asp file and change it so that sessions are stored in the database. This is the default in 9.63 and above which has improved session performance when using the database to store sessions.

So that the sessions are reliable in 9.67 and prevent session errors you do need to have the sessions stored in the database. If you had not done this then this in conjunction with the app pool issues on your website probably caused the session issues that your users were reporting.

Thank you very much for your support.

I need to say that i wasn't implying that the new forum version is the problem; i'm well aware of limitations that our hosting servers do have but until we change the hosting company i just need to find "workarounds" for any possible issues.

I will contact our server admin and try to find a solution.

Once i again, your support is very appreciated !
Thank you !

A bit of OT; hope you don't mind if i ask here as a first step.
How complicated is to transfer a site from the current hosting company (located in croatia) to your hosting servers? We use SQL database for our forum (cca 500MB in size) and old access databases for some other content and i never dome anything like this in the past so i'm a bit worried about the outcome and problems we may encounter if i decide to go that route.

Thank you !
