Hi,

We recently provided an upgrade to an existing 8.04 version of your forum to the latest version 9.69.

The 8.04 edition was powered by an MS Access database. We transferred this data into an MS SQL 2008 database by using the SSMA tool provided by Microsoft.

The .mdb file is local to the hosting environment of the forum. The MS SQL database runs on an external server.

I installed the new version into a different folder and found no errors. However, when trying to create a new topic I run into the following error:

Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occurred while writing to the database.
Please contact the forum administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_SQLServer_save_new_topic_data
File Name:- new_post.asp

Error details:-
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'dbo.tblTopic' with unique index 'tblTopic$Start_Thread_ID'.

I read somewhere you need to make a .bak file of the access database instead of doing it throug the SSMA tool. Can anyone provide me with a solution?

You should use the Upsize Wizard found in Access as this has better results than using the SSMA

This functionality in MS Access does not allow me to upsize a database to an MS SQL 2008 version.

I will try to update my version to the latest but I could do with a bit more hints on what differences and SSMA-generated result gives and the Upsizing Wizard.

EDIT: I tried directly importing the database from the MS SQL 2008 backend. I get the following error:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e2f'

Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'Author_ID', table 'id79024_prairiehondeu.dbo.tblAuthor'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.

/forum2/admin_register.asp, line 401

this after trying to create a new user.

Another thought: is it possible to create a new forum from scratch and then import the data through the admin backend of the WebWize Forum?

If you are using SQL Server 2008 then you would need to use the SSMA.

The SSMA tool means that you do need to do more work as the SSMA adds various constraints to database fields. What you will need to do is manually go through and remove these constraints.

Do you have a group of SQL statements I could use to manually remove these constraints? Isn't it also possible to disable these constraints while converting? I looked into the default settings of a project and saw "Check Constraints" is "False". Can I just change this to True?

Usually just use the default settings in SSMAand then spend 15 minutes going through the database after to make sure that everything is OK and remove any contains that have been added.
