I am running a forum with several thousands of members (SQL server). One of the subforums is "notification-forced" so all members receive the e-mail notification of a new posting.

The web is hosted on a quite strong hardware but sending out thousands of notifications still takes tens of seconds or even minutes though the IIS SMTP service. The message post ASP script eventually times out. Is there any other way how to handle (or process faster) the notification e-mails? This could probably be a problem on larger forums.

You could try upgrading and see if the performance improvements fix the issue.

Other things to try is different components and better mail servers to see if that speeds things up.

SmarterMail's free mail server I find can be very quick, much faster than using the IIS mail server.

Thanks for your comments. We have added lots of customizations to the forum so we are quite reluctant to upgrade. Does the version 9 use a different approach of sending notifications or is it still one-by-one? The current mechanism sends 20.000 notifications in about 5 minutes.

Yes it only send one notification for the first post, until you visit the board again, thus reducing email notifications by 70%
