actually another think i notice now is that the group level seems to stay on newbie (unless they are moderators) for all of the existing members(about 1500). Can this be modified?

All members are set to newbie.

You can change user groups by editing the persons profile if you are the admin.

If you have the ladder system setup members will be moved to their respective groups when they next post depending what their post count is.

Talking about updating to v7, how exactly can I do that easily? There's a problem with the difference in the user's profiles and messages in the database.... Anyways I'm just asking what's the best way to update to version 7 (I got v6.25)?

Just download the conversion tool and follow the instructions and come back here with any problems (like mine above). It is quite easy though and seems to be worth it in the end (in terms of making a more modern forum with polls etc.)

Just went live on the 7.01 SQL version and thought I'd drop in some early and brief notes about my experience (not too bad but some work required):

  • used recently posted SQL scripts to upgrade SQL database.
  • encrypt_passwords.asp processes 100 members each time and needs running several times despite the warning to run it once.
  • wrote additional DTS Packages to bring across data in buddylist, pmessages and smut tables. Check constraints had to be switched off on pmessages package.
  • all members are transferred to group 2 (newbies) and lose their existing status.
  • 4 members had an incorrect count for number of posts. Wrote MS Access comparison report to identify these members and changed the count manually in their profile.
  • Scripts do not apply defaults such as "Not Given" in a member's profile. No problems encounted or changes needed.
  • Active Topics only worked when Guest group was allowed forum access to relevant forums (the default for open forums). To prevent guests viewing postings, the guest group was added to all forums with no permissions.
  • While editing header.asp, the folder of the URL changed mysteriously in line 3 (default_javascript.js). There were IE "object expected" errors on upload buttons and elsewhere as a result.
  • A copy of the style sheet needed copying to the admin/includes folder as the main default.asp appears to get some minor formatting from the style sheet in this folder probably in error.
  • Sticky topics become normal topics and need making into Announcements.
  • Hyperlinks in posts to forums and other posts stop working as the asp files and URL parameters are different in V7. Some careful find/replace work in the threads table seems to have worked.
  • Users need to logon when you first go live. I assume a different cookie is used - they need to be prepared with their password when you go live.
  • Page borders change in this version to 0 rather than the default. Removal of borders settings in header.asp fixed this.
  • Frontpage was used to give upload permission to the image and file upload folder(s).
  • There is no longer a single option to email all postings to the administrator. Any user can click "Watch this forum for new posts" at the bottom of each forum in forum_topics.asp.
  • Spelling not checked yet but obvious error fixed in language file for help.
  • The V7 skin file contains additional info so I didn't use my 6.34 skin file directly and had to edit the new file.

Hope this save someone a few minutes.

The migrator tool is from SQL version 6.34 to 7.01 and became available a few days ago.

Please http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=2022&PN=8&TPN=3 - read this thread and http://www.mywgi.com/WWF_Upgrade_6_34_to_7_01.zip - download here.

The upgrade scripts are not in the same file as the forum itself. Look a few messages up for a link to download the upgrade scripts. Also search the forums as I believe there is a later version.
